History Gow Jobs (1941)

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Jimmy B, Aug 3, 2009.

  1. Rich Venza suggested I should post this on the main board as I had originally posted it on the Hot Rods of The Dry Lake Era social group

This article is from an issue of 1941 Collier's magazine.
    Enjoy!

GLAD YOU DID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've always thought it would be good to collect early Hot Rod features from off hobby magazines. There is a Dry lakes feature in a late 1930's issue of Automotive Industries that I'll dig out someday. Anyone else notice the Bugatti behind the Austin in photo #2?

WTF? No rust, tattoos or skanky chicks in hooker shoes?
    Good stuff. Thanks for sharing.

  4. Thanks for this Jimmy B! Always swell to get to read and see historical write-ups of the true early history of the hobby. Great reading for sure!

What is in the back round is sometimes just as interesting as the main picture:D

  10. I've always wondered how they came up with "Gow Job"? Anyone?

Thanks Jimmy B - The term GOW JOB was alive in later years than I thought.

Gow Out - Early ( generally pre-world war II ) expression meaning to accelerate quickly...Gow Job could be a from a term "go-job"...

From the "Ultimate Hot Rod Dictionary".

Knowledge is gold eh...it never gets old...just clearer...that Plated Austin and Tommy Lee Roadster sure highlight that.
