Hey guys time for some more hamb help....Im looking to install my steel decklid on my 31 coupe. Its just got two bolts holding it on "to swivel" it open at the top. It fits well just wanted to see what guys are running for mounts at the top and what latch is the best way to go...(besides the bungy chord) Heres a pic of one that I saw and I was also wondering what latches those are from in the pic... any help is greatly appreciated as always!

I'm having a hard time trying to get help on a decklid too! My problem is different from yours tho... Apparently the hinge people are taking the night off!

It looks like the hinges in that pic are some sort of sedan setup. I'd say mid to late 30's chevys, probably fords too.

These are from a 38 chevy. $76 bucks from Chevs of the 40's.[IMG]

The origional set up works very well, why mess with it? I understand if you are trying to do something trick or custom, but if not why use ladder parts?

Go to any of the model a parts suppliers and order the correct parts. My decklid was pretty rusty so I had to remake the plates for the pins to slide into but the rest was really easy, if you want to go stock. As for the bottom, just get the right parts. I used a stock handle and made the catch for it, it was really simple.

    Hey WhiteDevil,
On my 1930 Model A, I just used 3/8" bolts with the threads ground down. and washers for hinges and they work fine. As far as a latch goes, I used a VW trunk latch hidden in a recessed license plate in the panel below the trunk lid. I can provide pics upon request.

Does anyone have any tech on the rear decklid latch install or any pictures of their setup? Also anyone have pics of the older style hatches installed? The 39 or whatever chevy or ford latches....

    1. Get a Model A parts catalog from Snyder's or Mac's or Battlefield.
    2. Read it.
    3. Stop when you get to deck lid/rumble lid hardware.
    4. Look for hinge assemblies, latches, hold-ups, handles and striker plates for a deck lid equipped car.
    5. Order what you need.
    6. Open the box when it arrives and install the parts.

How much easier can this be? Model As have more parts available than any other car ever built including most brand new ones.

Are we building 1000 point factory restorations here? If he wants externals, that's his choice.

There's not much to installing external hinges. Just make sure you get them square with each other so they don't bind up. Space them evenly from the edges of the lid. You may have to make spacers as most hinges were originally designed to be bolted to thicker deck lids.

I am doing the exact same thing today. All of my parts are jacked and by the time I buy all of the missing pieces I'll have almost as much or more in it, than a set of external hinges.

Has anyone physically installed a set of 49 Ford hinges on a model A coupe?

I have a pair of those late 30's Chevy hinges, and they are definately "sided".

On a car like an A, I'm pretty sure you'd start by sanding the bases to fit the shape of the A sheetmetal. They have a slight curve to 'em depending on the which side you're looking at.

Next, I think you'd have to remove the pins, slide a piece of straight rod through the holes on both of them when you mount them so they would work together and not bind.

Kind of like door hinges on a Model A.

That's at least what I'd figure, but mine are still sitting in a box and I drive my A-bone around hoping gravity will keep my trunklid on.
