i searched but couldnt find anything on this, soo i want to see pictures of traditional striping done in the '50s-early '60s
The best '50s striping was more restrained than some done today. It was more common on race cars, Bonneville or drag cars. Classic examples are on Jack Chrisman's A sedan and on the Don Rackeman (sp?) Yeakle sponsored roadster, both done by Von Dutch. Ed Losinski's full-bodied dragster was another example of tasteful striping. I think that at one time Von Dutch worked out of Competition Body Shop, and did a lot of race cars then.
Actually was done in late 1956 (edited first post.) Color was '57 Pontiac Limefire Green laquer when the ponchos first came out with it. First trip to the Hasty Tasty everybody called it "Toad piss green." Friend of mine started shooting it at around 7:00am and laid the gun down at around 3:00pm. Used 5 gal of paint and reduced with 5 gal of thinner. Rubbed it out 2 weeks later and it looked like it was a deep pool of water. I kept the car another 2 years and never saw any cracking but did see some when I saw the car in a junk yard about 5 years later. The whole front end had been crushed.
You're referring to the purple dragster right? That car was awesome. I believe that was dutched as well.
Here's the dash in my 51 merc that was striped in the 50's.I don't know who striped it.Not a very good picture sorry.
