I need help with a master cylinder rebuild

I'm trying to rebuild the master cylinder on my 48 Fleetline, any one know how this should go?

If you have a good GM manual you should find that information there .

 

If he had a good GM manual he wouldn't have asked the question...

Ah hell, I'll leave off that comment.

Anyhow "after" you have honed the cylinder and cleaned it well, With brake cleaner or soap an water like Dawn dish liquid not any solvent based cleaner.

If there is a thick rubber washer it goes in first,

The the spring with the check valve in first

Then the cup with lips in.

Then the piston with the end with the holes next to the cup and it's cup at the back

then the rod with the snapring holding th washer on the rod in place.

The boot slips over the rod and goes around the end of the cylinder.

Then fill it with fluid an bench bleed it.

And this week if you ask what "bench bleeding" is your penance will be scrubbing ever Fellow Colorado Hamber's garage floor.

I'm about to open mine up(54) tomorrow for similar rebuild - or at least to see if the inside is ok. $140 - $190 for NOS, or $29 for the kit and @ 15 for a ball honing tool, hmmm, think I'll do it myself.

I ordered a manual for my truck last week before it arrived, and expect it in a few days. Soon I'll know it all.

How does the master cylinder come apart - any tricks to it? I have not rebuilt one yet, and don't want to damage it or have parts fly away upon disassembly.

What's the general guideline for bore inspection - how do you decide whether the bore is suitable or not for rebuild, or do you hone it first then see? It's been sitting for 7 years, with fluid in it.

Last, but not least, what prep is involved / ok? can I clean out the inside with anything like soap / water or should I use brake fluid only in it, or?

When you hone these do you run it dry or with some WD or H20?

Can't wait to drive my truck, but has to be safe!
