ive seen the car for years....maybe 20 years... met john once or twice and heard lots of stories...much of what you were told is true... that motor is floating in tranny fluid to keep it safe he told me...garlits had alot to do with john... not sure how you ended up being able to buy it... but yur lucky... it was never for sale when john was alive..and i never once pushed it... lots of people did though...

 

john was over 6 foot tall easy

Duh...I guess I should have read the story instead of drooling over the car. I think that was the find of the decade. Please keep us posted with the history you find and the build or no build. it is a true museum piece

This thing is great! Please preserve it and keep it around to show everyone that is the way they built cars back in the '50s, not everything had a perfect chop and was unchanneled.

In fact channeling a hot rod was the cheap way of lowering the car.

It looks really short with that spring behind juice brake axle, is the wheelbase about "8 inches shorten than a model A?

great car. it was cool getting to check it out at the LARS.

 

This car reminds me of the 1/32 model hot rods that Aurora made in the early '60s, especially with its Imperial wheel covers and ww slicks. Great find.

 

Very cool find. Sad story about its former owner though, a shame he went off the deep end like that and refused any help.

Looking forward to seeing what becomes of the car now that you've got it!

That's a bummer to hear that John passed away. A friend of mine who was an old hot rodder and I stopped by one afternoon back in 2001. John actually told us the whole story and let me sit in it. I'm about 6'2" and yes, it's a bit difficult to sit in. I heard the part about the motor being full of oil to preserve it too, as well as the Don Garlits build part. Also heard the story of it being on the Ed Sullivan show. So much preserved history in that one. Glad it went to a H.A.M.B.'er! Take good care of it!

You're a lucky bastard for your timing. I've thought about that hot rod for years since talking to him and getting to sit in it. What a blast that will be, getting it back on the road after all these years.

 

If you need a place to keep it my shop has some room in the!
