OK boys and gals, I'm not getting fuel up to the carb. I'm guessing it's the fuel pump, the gas line looks fine. I have a clear plastic fuel filter so I can see that fuel is not a comin'. The fuel pump is 13 years old, what could make it stop working? Or could it be a different problem? 1959 chevy biscayne 235 6 cylinder. Mechanical fuel pump. Thanks Oh yeah, it does have gas in the tank.
"13 years old, what could make it stop working?" Old age, 13 years of heavy service...OR lack of use.
try to syphon gas out of the fuel line, see if it is clogged there. is the fuel filter before or after? cause I have my clear one before the pump, to keep the sediment from damaging it. another after the pump, just for good measure. Do you have the glass bowl pump? it could have sucked in air from a leaky line or similar issue, easily fixed with a piece of gasket material and new line.
well this just scares me, I wonder what's the next item to go bad! But I guess that's to be expected.
No one could possibly predict exactly what component will fail next, but you can bet your ass that something will, some guys will take a car apart and rebuild everything, spend a few years fixing and have many years of trouble free service. Then some guys drive and enjoy what they have and fix it as it breaks, If you keep it long enough, the jack-stand and down time will workout the same.
I finally got around to replacing the fuel pump today, that fixed the problem, hooray!!! Great start to a Father's Day weekend. New problem discovered while driving it though. Within the quarter mile of being back home, A thump thump sounds starts to happen coming from the front right wheel area. I get home, jack it up, and take the wheel off. It's the spacer, it has started to come loose! The nuts had backed off about halfway off the nut, all except one! So, what's the remedy for this? I'm thinking lock tight but I want to be able to get them off someday. Is this a common occurrence or did I just not have them on tight enough in the first place? Either way, what's the fail safe?
