    Wow!

Nice variable radius roll bending application! What kind of machine did you do this on? Good Job!

Ya, this is a new product for me. I need to rely less on my local economy. Probably 20 to start. 1" 16g. How consistent do you think the finished hoops would be?

You might want to give a call on this one. Variable radius roll bending applications are pretty tricky. We will be typing a book back and forth vs. a quick 2 minute phone call. 920-482-3220

That's a pretty big radius, might be able to bend it around a plywood form, what do you think?

i think doing it in three pieces is the answer, three different radii, if you set the sides up in a jig and weld them all at the same time then whats a couple extra welds.

Plywood definatly wouldn't work. the radius of the rear hoop is just under 14". The three piece method works, and has good results, it just takes forever. Right now, I roll the front and rear hoops, cut them to size, then roll the top piece a little at a time to match the pattern.

Straps. Here you can see where I strap it down before is gets fastened. Slip roll would be another thing that would make life easier.

are doing a run of twenty?, if so then roll everything you need in one setup, start a binder and write down all your bender settings, my guess is you allready have a binder with all your part lengths.

You could also coil the material and make several part at one time.

Ya, when I started I had production in mind, so everything is pretty well documented. I need a break while doing this, so I just do enough for one trailer at a time.

Another good reason to upgrade when I can. Its not possible with my machine. The small hoops are below the manufacturers specs, so I'm already pushing it. Then, when I'm finished, I have to cut off the lead in pieces, and pull the dies out of the bender to get the hoops out.

Sounds like a pain in the

  22. I'm getting ready to revamp my rollbender that was initially used to make Crab Pots (traps) by the 1000's. single purpose. 48" diameter. 2 HP motor driving thru how much gear & chain reduction --- probably 100 to 1.

I rebuilt it but i'm not happy with my initial revision.

What is the best distance to have 2 rollers apart & the third of the triangle to force the bend? I'll be bending flat stock 1" solid rod and tube initally. Eventually I'll make some square tube dies.

Right now my top rollers are 12" apart. I'm reconstructing mine (posted about a month ago on this thread). It used to be a WWII engine boring machine made by KB-Brown???? This thing weighs about 1/2 ton.

All of the stock to hold the rollers is 3/4 plate & all rollers are 1-1/4 shaft needle bearings no bushings. Rollers are between 3" diameter & 4"diameter and the pusher roller is 10" on a 3" shaft. 2 rollers push and 3 make the bend.

Anyone got the geometry figured out to help me? I can do it myself but trying for a quick & easy solution.

    Thanks Movin/on

Here is a link to our roll bending machine specs. It will list the distance between the bottom rolls for you. This should get you close. Let me know if this does not answer your questions, I have tons of more info if you need.

  24. Shane: Thanks - the links do help. I can use the dimensions & scale the pictures to redu mine.

I'll post pictures in about a month since I've got other projects ahead of the roll bender.

Why not use some cleco's to hold the panel as you form it? If you punch your holes in the skin before mounting it, then as it lays down drill your 3/16" holes through the frame, cleco it, seems like it might be easier.

Cleco's are on my list. The hardest part is just handling the 5x10 sheet by yourself. I start at the bottom front, then have to roll it up around the front side. The straps work ok, I put one on each side.
