They tell me "you shouldnt have chopped it" or Why does it have to be low" Or how much money do you have in that thing now".

 

I really do not have any local friends that are hot rod adept or even understand why I thrive to own a car such as mine.

My car is called "shitty shitty bang bang" by friends, neighbors, relatives, and family.

All continue to urge me to sell it and buy something "done" and pretty...

 

My wife understands, She's actually better at spotting old cars in the weeds than I am. She really good at spending my money too......

 

grew up in a family that plain didn't speak car. we had no garage, and the driveway was steeply graded. used to pull motors on the easement out front of the neighbor's house (they loved that), and swapped transmissions on my back in the street with a buddy directing traffic. they used to try all kinds of shit to keep me from buying whatever i wanted to buy, now they come to me when something craps out on their late-models. found a girl to co-habitate with who doesn't mind parking her chitbox at the curb while i stuff our one-car garage with greasy parts. this is an improvement. or maybe she just likes the free car repair too.

 

35 + years ago one of my motherinlaw's lady friends made the comment of, "why does your soninlaw aways waste his time with those old cars?" Her comment was "Well, at least he is at home working on something in the garage instead of hanging out in bars and chasing women". You got it, that lady's soninlaw was famous for his time spent in bars and we kept him away from our wives.

Hell, when I was 16 in 1962 and bought my 51 Merc for 175.00 my school friends asked me why I wanted that "old" car. Now the same guys ask if I still have it when they see me.

EVERY time my brother-in-law see's my car: "does it hop up and down and are you going to put one of those bobbing head dogs in the back window?" - which would be funny if only he was an actual jokester, but he is anything but a funny guy - a real dweeb.
Finally, my wife said, you say the same exact thing every time...for the past 8+ years, at least come up with a new one.
He was shocked that I'd heard it before.

 

If mine keeps up the trash talking, she's likely to be my exwife. Hell, we haven't been married a year yet, but in the last 6 months all new information has come to life, like she doesn't like my "rusty pile of shit", hates the smell of me after I get in from the garage, hates dogs (after we adopted a puppy), and has no interest in having kids even though we talked about it a lot prior to our marriage and knows how much being a good father means to me. Shit. Where did I go wrong? Stupid redheads.

 

When ever I find a good deal on a vehicle I want the wife always tells me, "Sure, just sell the other two first." 2+1=1, not a good deal anymore. At least see has excepted that she will never be able to park her daily in the garage in her lifetime.

My father always asks me when in the hell I'm going to get those things on the road. But, it isn't out of malice, he just wants to ride.

Or there is the old "You know you'll never get your money back out of it, or it will always be worth nothing. Don't really think I'm in it for the money.

 

Not my wife.
Her father was a tool maker during and after the war.
She tells me that she loves the way I smell after working in the garage and that I actually can do something (build, fix, modify, etc).
While she was single, she met too many 'guys' that couldn't build anything other than debt and a hangover.

My family has been my biggest supporters. My neighbors and friends on the other hand... if you have to explain it they wouldn't understand.

 

Early on I said: "When I get to decide how many shoes and purses you get to have you can tell me how many cars and motorcycles I can have"

The onyl shit i get is to get it done, i dont think anyone doubt my capabilities, jsut my ability to follow through and finish it. but that wat i ahve my old boss, mark, for. i took a ride in his "rat rod" thats wat he calls it but it not just some unsafe junk, buick 455 and a 4-71. fastest thing ive ever been in, and when we were done he said "get all turbo chraged up and we'll race" so ill finish this one, and maybe not trash it in the process...

 

Should of known when I picked her up on our first date in my 63 impala ( every one elsein UK had minis ) "i'm not going anywhere in that"
She chose not to walk but had always resented the time, effort & money. After 30 years she knows there is no cure and leaves me to it. Bought me a new welder last Christmas. Still wont come for a hotrod ride though!!!

 

My ex-wife resented the hell out of my cars. My new much younger, much blonder, much thinner girlfriend loves my cars, my shop and my "home decor" Met this one at a car show!

they've been tryiong to figure out ways we can save the money i need to buy this ranchero i fell in love with,,,so i can start drag racing,,,
they always liked driving around in the 63,,,even in the texas heat with no AC,,,
my MOTHER on the other hand,,,thinks I keep wasting my "time, money and talents" when i had my car,,, she also hated it when i worked in a shop or still now when i fix my own car,,,,
its not LADYLIKE enough i guess,,,
it makes me happy though,,,
which is why my kids are itchin for that next project car i guess,,,,

My wife loves that i work on my own cars and hers! She just Gives me crap when I work on it alot and leave her inside with the baby. I don't want to wish our time away, but I cant wait till he's old enough to hang out in the garage with Dad all day and come in filthy covered in grease. Those are some of my best memories as a kid! Workin on Dad's project in the Garage.

My mother-in-law, who's a very positive person, tried real hard when she first saw my '33 after we literally dug it out of the ground: "Well, I guess that car would make a neat planter..."

We laughed about that for a while.

 

My now ex-wife didn't mind riding in my somewhat rusted '65 Chevy stepside when first met and for a while after we were married. Then shit changes. The truck became a piece of shit. My parts collection was supposed to have been scrapped when we moved into a "good, respectable neighborhood" in town. My model cars needed to be scrapped, along with my magazine library.
Her parents coached her into the attitude. Any time I talked about wanting to build a hotrod or if I showed them something I really liked in a magazine, they would know how the car was bastardized and why it shouldn't be done. He would even leave my wrenches out in the weather if he used them while visiting. No respect because he really didn't understand. Cars are for getting there and coming back, not much else.
My current girlfriend loves the smell of welding and running a cutoff wheel in a small garage. She and her Dad bought a '56 Olds more door project because of what she started enjoying with me messing with my Model A project.
Some people get it,, some people can't.

 

I get the "why don't you just buy a new car?" But mainly from people that don't know me. I've got a tom boy wife and two grown boys, they get it.

 

My son loves my old truck and once when I asked him to roll the window up before he got out he turned and asked "Dad is this how they did it in the old days" I thought it was pretty funny. I guess he was used to the power windows in ma's mini van.

 

just the assholes at work. funny, i'm the only one who drives a 42 year old car to work everyday. i hear the "some day i'm gonna build a ______. and it's gonna have a _____."
i ain't seen nothing yet from these people.
my family can't wait for me to get my 57 ford though.

When I brought my project home and put in the shop, my sister asked me when she saw it, "doesn't this scare you?" No way I said. Now it's kind of scaring me.

 

Nope. My twelve year old daughter cried when I sold my '39 pickup but she likes my Comet now. My Dad is also into old cars, he drives a '40 Standard Sedan. The rest of my family is either dead or I have no use for.

 

My family digs my F-100, as I bought it with my own coin as a daily driver when I was a junior in high school...

Pretty sure my wife pretended to like it at first, because she became aware of the fact that it wasn't going anywhere...now that she can see how much enjoyment I get out of working on it, pretty sure she likes it...

She loved the '56 T-bird, as did the family, from the time it landed.

The rule is, as long as all my shit doesn't overflow out of the garage, I can do what I want within our means. I get the double side, she gets the single for her car...

I am thinking of cutting the ceiling out for a lift to create a bit more floor space, or room to flip/part out good deals as they come...

 

It's ironic that my father-in-law would have owned a '35 Ford with skirts, DeSoto bumpers and who knows what else.....then the other one was my Dad's '35 Ford coupe.

No one in my family has a problem with MY hot rods.

dont know how it got that reputation, its only ever had to be towed twice, once the day i got it when the generator died and a second time when i ended up with a very large hole in the bottom tank of the radiator. Otherwise 2 years of trouble free motoring
