Thanks for all the serious replies! I was serious about the question as I've always been been a Chevy and Mopar man (except a '67 Fairlane I had 30 years ago) and am frankly ignorant of the Y blocks. All my buddies have been arguing for the SBC changeout and almost had me convinced, but my gut told me keep the Y. Looks like another old 292 will hit the road again. Again, many thanks!

  3. You already have the one with the good G heads on it,so rebuild it with a good cam and kit top it off with good induction and open up the exhaust and you will be very satisfied with a great running, reliable engine.Read what Karol Miller did with his.He used to run it at 7500 rpm.

  4. I'd stick with the Y block, I really dig 'em. Then again I'm a little biased, that's what's in my '62.

  5. Pull the 292 and eat sh-t, put a sbc in it and DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! JMO of course

I drive this Y daily. The only negative for me is solid lifter only for the Y's, but with rebuilt shafts and new lock nuts, I don't find my self adjusting too often.

i have two y-blocks, one is a 272 that is running and in my 55 fairlane, the other is a 292 that as the story goes was rebuilt and only run a little and burnt a valve and has been repaired and not run sence, last year i picked up a set of big valve heads and a large carb intake and hope to put it on the 292, i also have 3x2 intake and 94's i want to put on the 272, the 272 has external oil lines, i guess it has the pluged up oil passages, can the oil passages be cleaned out with the motor togather? i was thinking of changing the oil and running a quart of diesel fuel in it to clean out the oil passages?

When I was making a living pumping gas, I worked for a guy who had a 50 Ford with a Y-block and a Paxton blower. The Y-block sound and the whine from the blower was really neat, and as far as I know, no one blew him off. So I join with others, do the Y-block!

  13. Bud, altho I have never tried it there was a thread on Ford Truck Enthusiast Y-Block Forum http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum56/ about backfushing?? the oil lines.

It would be better to at least pull the heads as the oil passage makes a jog at the block/head area.

I had a 312 in a '58 Ford truck I used to have. Was cool and got around without a problem. :D

    Y BLOCK for me !
I have 2 - Y blocks , a 272 in my 55 Ford Fairlane and runs strong ! I am also building a 292 with a big cam and 3x2 with all the goodies ! They sound great and have a special sound to them . I had mine at the Jalopy Showdown yesterday ! The show was GREAT !!!
If you really , really have to replace the Y block , a Ford 302 will fit in real nice and easy ! Just don't stick a damn chevy in it !

I finally got around to unloading the 292 from my truck today and discovered it has a remanufactured block plate on it. It says it was .40 over. How far can you take these engines over? At what point are you at the 312 cubes? Thanks!

Ya know an FE engine would also be great.....but that aside stick with the Y-block.
my first car was a Y-block 55 Ford 272 with a set of glass packs they sound bitchin'.

  20. '57,

I don't have the bore spec. with me at the moment, but in order to get a 312" you will need a 312" crank (longer stroke). Check John Mummert's site for lots of info. http://www.ford-y-block.com/

  21. Mines at 3.860 which equates to 309 cubic inch from a 292. I dont know if it could go any more and get pistons.

292 is3.75X3.1 312 is 3.8X3.44 The webrodder build talks about using .040 312 pistons cut for Pinto rings. I think it was the same article mentions early 292s have a habit of bottom end failures taken out this far, but not later ones. A sonic check would be a good idea that far over.

I've got a Y-block in my 55 and it's old and tired but it runs great and sounds great and has 3 twos, wouldn't change it for anything and I would crush the car before putting a small block chevy in it.

  26. 292 is 3.750 x 3.3" the 239 and 256 had the 3.1" stroke.

In my ref. the stroke is listed as 3.3 in 2 places, but the 3rd one, the 1 I actually looked @, has 3.1 typo:mad:
