Thanks for finding Jack and the straight scoop. I was pretty popular in Vietnam as I had a subscription to Drag Times and National Dragster. Of course, they were out of date but still, everybody wanted them "next". Mike
Popular Hot Rodding put out a lot specialty magazine, here is the Drag Racing Handbook. It was mainly a recap of what was featured in the magazine for the year.
I don't know much about this magazine, except that it was excellent. They covered all the sanctioning bodies, AHRA, NHRA, UDRA, NASCAR drag division
Jack:I have one copy of that magazine;I'll have to dig it out of my bookcase.Believe it was published in Chicago as the one I have has ads from a bunch of Chicago area shops.
All American Drags...Do you recall if this was available on the new stands? I been collecting magazine for a long time and have only seen a few these.
Yes, it was available on newsstands. That's where I got mine; gave them away years ago. I corresponded with the mag in 1967 about providing stories and pictures for it, but never did. The editor at that time was Jon Asher. On the letterhead, the name of a previous editor is marked out -- John W. Lutzo. Asher's previous title -- Special Events Director -- is also marked out. The mag was based in Chicago. It was one of my favorites.
I've had some of these I got from either somebody's attic or a swap meet several years ago, probably only paid about $1/mag, if that, at the time. I have 5 All American Drags counting the one pictured above, they are all from 1966. Also pictured here is another regional magazine, the only one I've seen of this title.
Thanks guys, for all the information on the All American Drags magazine. Since it seems like a rather rare magazine, I will post two more covers that I have.
Two new magazines came out in Feburary 64 Drag Racing and Modern Rod. Drag Racing had excellent coverage of the national drag scene with a big emphasis on California. Most of the feature cars were dragsters, altereds, gassers.
In 1970 they changed the heading to Drag Racing USA. Funny car were now sharing as much space as the dragsters. I have issue up to 1975, I don't think it was around too much longer.
These are the only two vintage magazines I have... I love them to death. They're probably not that rare. But hey! You gotta start somewhere.
Modern Rod came from the same company as Drag Racing, Kimtex Publishing. They covered hot rods, drag racing and even some stock car, fomular one and road racing. By early 66 they would devote all their attention to S/S and funny cars and change the name to Drag Strip.
