I have owned the 38 since 1978. I built it to haul my family but they are out on their own now. I have a nice driver quality 40 Ford pickup that I drive daily so the 38 hasn't been used for a couple years. I refuse to let it sit and dry wrought away. I'm building another 40 pickup in the traditional way with a Buick nailhead motor and will sale my currant 40 driver when the project is done. Again I dont need the A coupe because I have a 40 Ford coupe that I have owned for 45 years. Ultimately I would like to end up with a 40 coupe, a 40 pickup and get crazy with a 32 5w coupe down the road. Does it seem that my tastes have just got expensive? Naaa!
I think if were me I'd make the decision based on the compared quality of both cars. If the A is built to the same standards of your '38 then I say trade. If the A needs a bunch of work ($$$$$/time) your probably better of with one you know the quality. Tough call...........what does your gut say? Frank
Talked to the guy again last night and by all sounds it is a quality built car. All the good stuff installed. His reason for trading was his wife has MS and they need a sedan for her comfort. I guess the chopped top and a Model A coupe was a little tight for her. I had a guy go look at it for me and it must have been a nice one because he hasn't got back to me and tried to do a trade with his coupe. Bastard! But the deal is still good with us.
If you only want the A so you can turn it around and sell it, then get it as it will likely sell faster. If the A will be a keeper and it's just you and another passenger, get it they're definitely kool. But if you have a family or grandkids the 38 is much more comfy and practical. Once you swap the wheels for some steelies, of course.
The model A is really nice looking but it looks like Mustang II under the front and they have always seemed bulky and a little wide for a model A. You could alway cut this out and swap to a dropped axle down the road. For that reason I think I would consider keeping the '38. Lower it more, perhaps some wheelkid artillery wheels and whitewalls, chrome steelies with no caps and whitewalls, or you can't go wrong with Halibrands.
Slap some steelies and wide whites on the 38 and your good to go.... with you and all of your friends.... or at least a cooler in the back seat.
Now, a totally different sorta car.........so which type do you prefer-- the coupe or the 55 Ford custom style?? Certainly diverse choices. The 55 looks to be done pretty nicely. Hmmmmm.....
Trade, Trade, Trade, Trade, Trade, Trade, Trade, Trade, Trade, Trade, Trade, Trade, Trade, Trade, Trade, Trade, Trade, Trade, Trade, Trade, Trade, Trade, Trade, Trade, Trade, Trade, Trade, Trade, Trade, Trade, Trade, Trade, Trade, Trade, Trade!
I'd prefer the A "with changes made", but think that you should keep your focus on what your after and not get into a position to be side tracked. That said, the A may well be more desirable to the average Street Rodder (90% plus of potential customers).
