Just out of curiosity, does anyone here know the approx. fuel economy i.e. how many miles to the gallon a late 40's- early 50's Chevy 216 six-banger got? I'm just curious. Thanks a bunch
2 carbs and hearder ya do a little better .. i get around 21 highway with powerglide gears 2 bxov carbs and a set of headers
mine wasnt that great,....with a three on the tree and a 15inch wheel (dont remember tire size now but its not short) i only got about 9mpg over all on a 300mile trip. its single carb, straight pipe exhaust and i was doing 65-70 most of the way. it runs well and has never had any issues. its been switched to a pertronix but its still a 6 volt system.
I'll second that. Even on an otherwise stock engine, a well tuned dual carb setup and dual exhausts will give you both more power and more mpg.
235 won't be much better, if any. I replaced my '37 216 with a '61 235 and there wasn't much difference........until I added an OD and went from around 18 to 23 on a trip.
yeah i do think my mileage will go up from 9mpg with a tired 216. a fresh, well built 235 should make more efficient power and use less fuel than the 216. i dont want civic fuel sipper mileage but single digits out of a 6cyl is embarassing. on the same roadtrip my buddies 350/350 combo got double the mileage.
I was getting 17ish with my 216 in my 53, I just dropped a '62 235 in and am getting right around 21-22 with it.
