I apologize for the cell phone picture but I spent all my money on the car and can't afford a digital camera. With that said, this is the lower control arm of my '53 chieftain. As you can see, the spring is slowly making it's way through the metal. I had originally planned on a solid axle, but plans have changed and I'm in the process of lowering it. I'm dropping the control arm out when I cut the coils and I'll be repairing the coil bucket at the same time. Here are the tools I have to fix this: 110v Mig welder capable of welding up to 3/16" sawzall angle grinder(s) air hammer/die grinder(s) hacksaw chop saw torches (if/when I can afford to refill the gas)
Maybe get a donor arm and replace the cup....or just use a different control arm that isn't rusted.....I'd call Bob Owens ...Owens auto salvage in Texas....he'll have one for ya I'll bet!
Local u-pull-its around here don't let YOU pull anything... plus all they have is new metal. I emailed Owen's Auto Salvage and crossed my fingers. Thanks
If you are lowering it anyways, why not build a spring drop in place of the rotten one? be able to use the stock spring with all of its strength, fix your problem and lower it all in one shot.
