car runs great at idle ( i mean can idle perfect forever) but as soon as i put it in gear it acts like its not getting any gas and dies after about 5 feet of driving. i know the trannys good nothing is locked up there. has a new fuel filter. im thinking fuel pump, or a bad carb?? needed some ideas from smarter engine guys then me. any ideas would be very helpful. thanks
disconnect fuel line from carb, add an extension line to run it away from engine comparmtnt and into some type of container crank motor and see what kind of fuel volume and pressure your getting if it looks like you have ample volume and decent pressure your supply is good that would eliminate that
It could be one of several things 1. are any of the fuel lines twisted or kinked? 2. Is the accelerator pump working? it may worn enough to not give a good shot of fuel off idle and let the car stall. 3. the low speed circuit in the carb could be plugged with dirt or crud. Will the car keep running and run ok if you get it up to road speed? I'd do as Russco suggested first to make sure you are getting fuel pumped that far.
Soon as it dies, shut the key off, take the top off the carb or pull the lower bowl screw on a Holley.
To me it sounds like a clogged jet in the carb, it gets enough fuel to run at idle but as soon as any vacuum is applied to the carb it's running too lean and it dies. Pull your jets and clean them, I can ALMOST guarantee that is your problem, especially if the carb has been sitting for any amount of time. Seen it a hundred times, but that's just my $.02
I had a 350 Quadrajet once would idle all day soon as you gave it any gas it would die.It was a bad accelerator pump.
Ok, I went back and read your first post again and thought about it for a while. Does it die when you first put it in gear or just when you go to take off? Now the big question. Stick or automatic trans? Assuming that the trans is an automatic will the car keep running if you accelerate very gently? and will it run at highway speeds afterwards? Most likely the culprit is a bad accelerator pump but I'd still check for enough fuel getting to the carb.
yea this motor has a quadrajet too. im thinking because of all the answers abuot the accelerator pump, that i will just throw a new carb on it .
yea its an automatic, it was doing this when the mufflers and cat was off, new fuel filter at the carb to. thanks for all the help guys it sounds like its most likely the accelerator pump
Have you jacked with the timing since it last ran right? If the carb's even working a little they'll run better than that. But if the timing is like 30 degrees out they spit and die in gear.
Shifty maybe on to something too. and while it very well could be the accelerator pump you can usually feather the throttle and keep one running they may have a stumble, bog and hard cold starts but you should still be able to manipulate the foot feed and drive it. Have you checked fuel supply at carb? have you checked timing? some more detailed info about the motor and any recent changes would help too. I would do a little simple diagnostic testing before I started throwing parts at it
Russco<SCRIPT type=text/javascript> vbmenu_register("postmenu_3773857", true); </SCRIPT> AMEN brother..........100 % wth ya on that one......... LOOK Seems to simple to me, O.P.er...... if you have another carb, go ahead and put it on , DAG MAN its only four bolts and it will tell you 99 % of what your problem is... IF not ,STOP and think for a minute, What all did you mess with OR change before the problem started ... POST or REPLY HERE and we can help more.....
havent changed anything on the motor competly stock, it has never came out of the car, i bought the car from the city auction so i dont know much about it. i have been messing with the timing but could easily be off some, theres a swap meet on sat usually can pick up a good carb cheap there and then i will start messing with the timing. seems to be a quadrajet thing the more i read about it on the net.
No, that's not a quadrajet thing. I've owned a hundred. Look at your timing and vacuum before throwing unknown swap meet parts on and further confusing things. You're about to troubleshoot yourself into the bottom of a deep hole that was dug with your money
