I got this diff which I want to use in another project.
I am told it is a 1954 Ford F series item, which seems fair enough, but when it comes to getting parts for it such as a pinion seal etc I am not sure how to ID it.

Below is a copy of a parts list just for pinion seals which it needs, I figured I would collect the parts and then get somebody around to help me do the work on it. Dont want to drive to and from the parts store all day or finding out later that certain parts are not available over the counter and need to be ordered in when I have the hired help with me.

I have also attached a couple of pic's of the diff which may mean something to you Ford diff guru's out there.
    Thanks, Russ.

Bump, guess it is not going to be so quick like I thought!

  3. The '54 did/does have the Dana 44...there's nothing unusual or unique about it for that specific application, if that's what you're wondering. :)

From what I can see in the pics, it is a D44 that you have.

Cool that is all I need, beats dragging the diff out and putting on the counter at the parts store.

I am not quite ready to dis-assemble it yet, but do want to have all the spares ready to do when the time comes.

What gears will inter-change with this center.

I have 4:1 now and looking for 3.7:1 ratio

One last try for info on the diff gears as per above.

  7. Russ,

If I'm understanding your question correctly....3.73 & down (numerically) use one carrier; 3.92 & up use the other. http://www.ringpinion.com/ContentFr...ent/Parts/Carriers//Common_Carrier_Breaks.inc

    Your axle, general details: http://www.ringpinion.com/DiffDetai...ana+Spicer&DiffID=15&DiffName=Dana+Spicer+D44

A Dana open case (to switch to the 3:73 ratio) is about $65.00, & you could use something like a Powertrax if you want limited slip of some kind...or, you can get the Dana/Spicer specific case for limited slip, or an Auburn...or other brands, for that matter.

Without switching cases your lowest option is the 3.92 set, and, frankly, I wouldn't bother switching gears from your 4.10 for that small a ratio change...I'd use taller tires instead. ;)

Might be worth calling Randy's for their recommendations, or another driveline specialist.

what you have there is a dana 44 19 spline the carrer is a 4 ser to put a higher ratio you need a 3 ser carrior for 19 spline only the later 30 spline carrer wont work for the bore where the side gears go is to big. there are some carrers out there that will work you just have to look for them if you use a 44 power lock with 19 spline and three ser you dont have to change any thing .hope this helps. sorry for the bad spelling

Many thanks to Homespun91 & Clays diff for the specific info on the gear situation as I would never had known that carrier stuff.

OK I am good to start searching for my carrier and gears.
I am not putting any huge HP thru it and so I will just go for an open center with a taller ratio.

    Best wishes, Russ.
