Thier are complete deformities out there that can espically be branded a rat rod, however thier are also rods out there paying a huge respect to the history buit with nostaligic, original parts with true patina that are primered, but back in the 40's and 50's they usually rolled in paint
Primered cars are more of a fad that has caught on recently(thanks to Robert Williaims and his 32 roadster back in the 80's):)

so should primered cars be called rat rods or hot rods?

*say if i got anything wrong,
    thanks

No.The term "ratrod" refers more to shoddy workmanship, and poor engineering than it does to surface finish.

RAt ROD TODAY!!!!! IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH PRIMER, PAINT CHROME , NO WAY TO EXPLAIN IT REALLY BUT USALLY IRON CROSSES,SKULLS, CRAPPY WORKMANSHIP,SHOCK VALUE ARE USALLY FACTORS IN BUILDING A RAT ROD,

TODAYS RAT RODS ARE THE NEW PROSTREET...HOPEFULLY THEY WILL GO AWAY JUST LIKE THE PINK GRAPHICS OF THE 80S, TO BAD THERE IS GOING TO BE SO MANY SCREWED UP OLD FORDS IN THE AFTERMATH

depends on the car, and the build quality.imo

if the car is built rudely and crudely and looks to be unsafe then i would cal it a rat rod (sorry)

if the car is built and built fairly well or professionally, or is an o.g hot rod then ita a hot rod plain and simple..... you gotta remember a lot of guys had their cars in primer because they couldnt always aford the cost of a paint job.

now i know the term rat rod is a touchy one but if your car looks the part well then it is a rat rod so dont get all but hurt when its called one. if you dont like it then you shouldnt be driving it......

But then again like we're tought when we were little. "sticks and stones..................."

Mine's primered but I don't call it a rat rod. It's also primered because its not finished. I'll have paint on it down the road but right now I like it the way it is. I can see both sides of the argument. If an old timer who had a nicely turned out hot rod in the 50's with paint, shine, interior etc. Didn't think my car was a hot rod, I'd understand. I just can't stand it when some clueless Street rodder/muscle car/Corvette/Harley gold chainer type walks up and says "cool rat rod."

I try to politely correct them especially if they're jazzed about my car. Or I just say thanks and forget about it. I get the rat rod thing all the time, who cares?

  26. Spraycan primer was what we used to keep what we were doing in the driveway from rusting while we drove our cars to school or work during the week. a shiney paint job and nice upholstery was the goal.
