Anyone know of any suppliers of small bevel gears? Think of a steering column that needs to mesh with a shaft at 90 degrees and spin it. Everything that I see online is waayy too big...and I've seen the threads on 90 degree steering columns but they are chain driven. I need this to be gear driven. I've sent out emails and called a few places but they are all custom cutters that don't seem interested in small quantities or any sale under $500

Try McMaster Carr, they carry all the hardware you need. I've used them for bevel gears in the past.

    Perfect!! thanks!

36-3window you nailed it but I'm basically building one from scratch with my own housing.

  4. if you are building your own , why not take some beveled gears out of a rear end?

didn't think of that...but I'm trying to keep weight down so I have to compare components down to the pound. I'll see what my dad has laying around

maybe spider gears? that what you mean?

  7. that's what i meant

  8. A local industrial supplier can order them from the Browning catalog.
Make sure you order them with a keyway, they are also available plain.

Spider gears are plenty hard, but don't have keyways or set screws.

    How about two swivel sockets.

  10. Not something I would choose for steering.

  11. The 90 degree gears especially for steering are used int the forklift industry. Barrett Industrial used them in a stock selector type truck oh, a couple decades ago. The gears were good quality and there was even a nifty backlash adjustment. Some of the had a through shaft on one gear so the box could also be used to reverse rotation. That could make some boxes useful that can't be reversed.
