Can you belive someone traded this in for a new Ford Ranger in a small town Ford dealership in northern Colorado? Accually I think the Ford dealer did the stealing. Judging from the price my brother paid they didn't give who ever much on the trade in.
43000 mile, rust free restored 55 Packard Clipper. Gotta love them taillights and dagmars! Yeah, it's a moredoor but he restores vintage camp trailers, it will look sweet rolling down the road with trailer in tow.

  2. Nice score. I can't imagine trading something like that on anything new. Gawdawful junk is all that comes out of Detroit or Dearborn anymore.

'Well, I think its about time to trade in old Betsy. We've had her for a while now (5 decades) and got a few miles under her belt (22K). I think I'll go down to the Ford place and get me one of them new Ranglers. Get in Mildred, let's go.'

I worked with a guy around 1990 who drove a 40 Ford coupe as his daily. He loved the car, but couldn't do any of the repairs himself. He eventually traded it in at a Chevy dealer for a minivan. Unbelievable...

It's easy when a guy inherits is dad's/grandads old blue 4 door and has no interest in it.

Or maybe the "hotties" at the old folks home don't want to be seen riding in a car they remember from when they were young an really hot.

any number of scenarios could be imagined on this one but it would be interesting to know what the real one was.

At least it went to a good home and will get to go out and play on a regular basis wagging a nifty restored trailer behind it. Good enough.

About 20 years ago a guy traded in a `55 Chevy 2-dr into the dealer for a new 3-cylinder Metro. He just retired from the post office and always said when he retired he would get a new car. That Chevy lated him 30-plus years and would still be going, I doubt he could still say that about the Metro.

Buddy of mine got a call from his pal at a Chev dealership (this was in Seattle). Some older man had just traded in a perfect 68 Chevelle 2dr hdtp (not a Malibu) with a 327 and factory fourspeed. The guy had ordered it new, and felt he was ready for a new car, so he traded it in (this was about 1978/79) on some new stupid thing. Anyway, my pal hustled over to the dealership and bought it before they could even put it through the auction (they weren't interested in trying to sell an 'old' car). All Bob had to do was have the vinyl roof redone (faded) - everything else was pristine.

unfortunately, now with all the car auctions on TV and the atrocious prices being paid for anything that doesn't sport a rubber bumper (and even some that do), everyone is thinking they have a 'collector' car over at grandma's house.

saw where some ol' codger traded in a 55 210 in real nice condition to buy one of those chevy econorides..was buisy at work when i drove by...3 hours later when i came back by to see if it was still there...you guessed it..it was gone!
this was about a year and a half ago. (when cars were selling) I asked about it and was told it was traded in on the new ride..but they didnt go into numbers and all
dont know how much he got for it or how much it sold for , but i bet the owner of the dealership snatched it up and took it home

I can imagine the salesman now, pretending to look in his NADA wholesale book under "Packard" saying, "yeah, here it is... Packard four door..... Umm. Book says it's only worth $1,200."

As a teenager my ma worked at the ford dealer, and my brother and I bought two trade ins,a 62 grand prix, and a 59 rambler, for $75 each, this was the early 80's and they were just 20 year old beaters at the time.

back in the mid 80s , i did a brief stint at a ford dealers bodyshop, old lady came in with a 72 caprice classic (the thing was absolutley fucking gorgeous) with a little rust around the rear fender skirts. didn't want to pay for repair, so she traded it in. the next day i forked over 400 bucks and she was mine! (the car, not the old lady)

i forgot to say that a year later i sold it to a pastor for 4000 bucks!
will i go to hell for that?

My buddy bought his 60 something Pontiac Lemans from a big FORD dealership for next to nothing back in the 80s.

  21. Sounds like a deal I had on a '70 Imperial once. An 80 year old man came in to the Chevy dealer I was working at, and trade his 33K mile '70 Imperial for a new '80 Chevy Citation. I bought the Imp for $450 and my dad bought it from me. He pulled a 26' travel trailer with it for a while.

  22. great score for your brother...

Well the payments will only be 48 months and we'll only give you partial trade for that old car

I can remember a day in 63, I was working at a parking garage in downtown Seattle.
One of my regular customers drove in in her 57 Nomad,as she was getting out of the car ,she told me she and her husband were going shopping for a new car that after noon. The 57 was going to be the trade in , so I told her I would match the trade in offer.
The next day ,she was back and said the dealer had offered only $450.00 . Told her I had $600 to spend, that was all it took to seal the deal. I wish I could find another like that, I still miss that one.

$7100. Heck the chrome bill for the resto was probably close to that! Makes one wonder what the dealer gave for it, course a lot of times they flip cars like this for close to what they have in it, to far from their normal dealings.

My dad had a 1973 Monte Carlo. Obviously not HAMB friendly, but it was a really nice car. Custom metal flake green paint, white vinyl with black piping, a ton of pin striping and some chrome mags. Not really a lowrider, but it would have fit in fine cruising the Boulevard where he was stationed in Long Beach when he bought/built it.

Fast forward to the early 80's, and the car was still pristine. My dad's one of those "wipe it down with a cloth diaper" guys when it comes to maintaing his vehicles.

He decided that with 2 kids, it was time to "settle down" and get a "responsible" family car.

So, one day he comes home with a Chevy Citation hatchback. He had gone and traded in his Monte Carlo on a new Citation... without telling anyone.

My mom was so mad about it she didn't even speak to him for a month. I don't blame her.

    Damn. Nice score.
I do car ads for the newspaper at work, so I see all the new stuff before it goes public. Keep in mind this is Maine I live in, so there is a big call for a lot of trucks and most anything with all wheel drive. So when I was putting together an ad for a local Ford dealership last winter and noticed there was a red 1980 Ferrari (think Magnum P.I.) for sale as traded I nearly shit my pants. It had less than 60,000 original miles, had never seen a salted road and they didn't know what to do with it and clearly just wanted to get rid of it so they had it for sale for $23,000. I called my dad right away since I had been teasing him for years about his Magnum P.I./70's pornstar mustache and he's in a different tax bracket than me. I even call him Magnum from time to time. I always told him he needed the red Ferrari to finish the ensemble. He thought about it and promised me he'd go check it out. He's still kicking himself, especially when I get a chance to remind him. That Ferrari didn't last the next day it sold so fast. Someone knew a deal when they saw it and he let it slip through his fingers, I gave him a head start and everything! He thought h could just mosey on over when he felt like it and it would be waiting for him! Hah!
Good for your brother for being Johnny-On the Spot.

  30. Holy cow, talk about "right place, right time"?? Great score! Similar happened to me about '76, I was working at a Ford garage in suburban Detroit. I got back from a parts run and saw a rode-hard & put away wet, '65 drop-top Mustang 289, 4spd at back of the used car lot. I asked the sales mgr about it. It just came in on trade. How much? I asked. He says "Just get it outta here, we'll talk money later". I drove it home that night. Next day I asked how much? He says "Is $50 too much?" Doh.
