One of my favorite rods...saw this Model A sitting in the parking lot of So-Cal speedshop in Phoenix one day a few years ago. Had to stop and take some pics.

The car in your thumbnail used to belong to a buddy of mine. Look closely at that engine, it is actually a small block Chevy with polished Lincoln rocker covers. Still bitchin' as hell though.

I picked up a 57 ranch wagon with a 312 and a "bird cage" 4bbl carb in 85. Now I have the time and money to do it. At first I wanted to resto and make it a show quality car. My tastes have changed a bit and now I just want to drive it. 56k miles, factory a/c, factory class 2 towing hitch,no radio,ps or pb. Bought it off the original owner for 200 smackers. Should drive in the fall.

'31 A roadster, 292 out of a '64 p/up, T-10 4 spd. It goes down the road pretty good. Someday it'll have a 312, ECZG heads and enough cam to make it bark.:D:D

be sure to keep the 292 block and use it, as opposed to a 312 block. Stronger.

Actually, I always thought the blocks were the same...

    My Y-block was originally a 272, bumped up to a .30 over 292

  20. 312's are a different block. The main journals are larger than a 272/292, and so thin that they are prone to crack in the main webbing.
Trick to do is get a good 292 block and turn the mains on the 312 crank to fit the 292 block- thus making a 312, but haveing a much stronger block.

This one was Whiskeyrunner Matt's. We built it over the spring a few years ago.

    good to know
    thanks, I never realized!!

  23. Hey Jaker, see that "ugly" pic in my earlier post? it's a toasted '56 ECZ-C 312 block (at least 2 cylinders split from years of water sitting in 'em) but the crank & rods could probly be cleaned up. I pulled one rod cap - crank looks to be virgin/unturned. Come spring I may be disposing of my leftover stuff - this could be on the pile to go (had one other guy interested in it). And I may be driving over to Ft McCoy/Sparta area in March. PM me if you might be interested - if I dump it, it'll be for really cheap (would rather swap than sell). sorry, no extra 292 stuff.

The Blue Racer had a 312 punched out to 327 with a Hilborm F.I. on it, and I was told it was the only modified to ever win a NHRA national title with a "Y" block,.... #424, B/SR ( won at the 1964 US NAtionals)

  27. I'll check & see next time at the shop. Actually it's 2 colors, green undercoat with gold overtop. I was trying to get it as close to original '55 Windsor built Merc 292 color as possible. Will post a reply in a few days.

Heres one I'm putting togther with TONS of help from some real good guys over on the yblock forum - this one doesnt have any cool vintage intake or valve covers but I am on the hunt, never mind the air cleaner on it - its just sitting there and wont be used on this engine. I have one of my students milling out some header flanges for it now - anxious to monkey around with those...

Thanks for the info on that, not sure if the 312 block I have is good anyway.
