You are right! He should not use a '32 body because that has been done before. No pearl paint, no metal flake, no candy and no panels because that's all been done before! Better sand off the pinstriping because that has been done before!
Dan's car is great, I remember seeing it in Rod & Custom and thought it looked awesome. But almost anything you do can be traced back to something. They said there were about 650 cars at the GNRS, and this was the 60th anniversery of the show, so that would be about 39,000 cars. I think some things have been done before.
The liberace was inspired by some of the old customs of Barris ,Roth, and the other customizers of the 50's & 60's. This car was designed, built and painted by the owner in his backyard garage with a little help from some friends. It was over 4 years in the making. So when your 75% done with your build you don't change it because someone else has a similar paint scheme.

I did. I had choosen copper for Big Olds the year before we had that HUGE copper color craze in the begining of this decade. Then in mid 2004, just as we were getting ready to mix the paint a fat fender 48 Olds convertible shows up at a show with copper paint. I pulled the plug on that color choice right then and there.

Red '32's or black 40's are one thing BUT I had to take a triple take myself thinking they were the same car they looked that much alike. I think the current builder/painter did himself a dis-service because they will also be compared now. It is a great looking car though.

hey Blown, it's all good, no ones trying to hurt anybodies feelings, here. I think it's cool that you guys built it in the garage and all that, I also built my wifes roadster in my garage before I opened the shop, thats what it's all about. The two cars are very different, I think it's just the paint scheme that people are comparing. If it was the exact same layout with white and orange I don't think anyone would have even brought it up......?

like you said everything is a derivation of something else, I didn't invent panel paint etc.

oh yeah, and about changing mid project, I had picked "Crimson Ghost" as a name for my '34 coupe almost ten years ago I had only told 3 or 4 people)but I'm still working on the damn car, and Rick Dore just showed up with his Crimson Ghost at the GNRS which is a hardtopped 37 coupe in almost the exact same color I was gonna paint my hardtopped 40 coupe. so now I need a new name and a new paint color....this shit happens.

Ahh...Dan Collins, the Al Gore of '60s styled show rods. He did it all before anyone.

Both cars are bitchin'. Both cars emulate (immitate) a '60s show car style.

It's funny to see somebody here labled a copy cat when we're all emulating and immitating shit that was done by the real innovators 40, 50 and 60 years ago. It's all been done before.

Let's all not get to full of ourselves and face the fact, we're all fuckin' copy cats. All those hip-hop goofballs putting wings on Hondas and dubbs on Escalades are being more original than any of us, but hell, I'd rather immitate something cool than innovate something assinine(sp) any day.

Yep, you do have THAT right. But not until after you bagged on Craig's workmanship. You're acting like a punk.

I was hoping to run into you this last weekend to tell you how much I enjoyed your '38 pickup and the little modified. I wanted to comment on the quality of the builds as well. Quite frankly, those two cars are leaps and bounds better than anything else I've ever seen from you.

Craig built this, (car) ALMOST entirely himself, save for the upholstery (he helped with that as well). He never intended it to be a world class, winner take all show car.
You won't hear him talking smack about your ride....well, at least not until he sees this.

I never said his car sucked, or his paint sucked, just that Nick was in a different league as a painter. I'm not trying to make a living as a car painter.... I had Nick paint it, cause I wanted it bitchin.if your gonna put a car in the Grand National Show, it's gonna get picked apart, mine did. Thats part of the deal. Not tryin to have attitude or be a punk. I think his car would have gotten even more positive feedback if the panels were a different color, because no one would be making the comparison. thats all. And I did everything but paint and upholster the Singapore Sling myself(in my garage, just like Craig). that doesn't mean that everyone has to say they like it just so they dont hurt my feelings. ok, fuck this topic has taken way too much time out of my day. Can't we all just get along?

Hey Dan, I can only guess what that bad taste left in your mouth is! I'm sorry, I did'nt know you owned the color purple! And are'nt you quite the hypocrite painting your car the same as Larry Watson has for years? I guess this means I can't be on your Buddy list! You munchkin Dufus! P.S. Spunk is my guess.

  15. can someone post both craigs car and dans car to let the masses see the differences and then everyone can make their own decision on who's car is cooler or better or how different they really are. so what the have panels that have same colors. that's all. that's it. and if I had to vote it would be craigs car hands down. I like the style of his car and the overall finish product. and for a first time builder going to such a prestigious show finishing 2nd in class is not something to be ashamed about.

Well here they are... Sounds like a few people changed color mid build, not even to not be compared, but to have something different.

You know, I've always found backhandedcompliments are typically comprised of roughly 90% backhand...

I always thought that Dan actually did himself a disservice by painting his truck green... I mean, it's only going to draw unfair natural parallels to MY car! And mine was TOTALLY done first!

Nice pics BTW, bigdaddy... (and I MEAN it!) :D

I didn't want to start any drama, just make it clear it was not a copy cat. I found found a couple of pictures for comparison. They really are two different cars with a few similarities.

I would say the fact that both of these guys actually DRIVE these cars is the real point - I know that the Liberace gets driven - and REALLY driven hard - and I have seen the the Sling around Paso being driven as well at the Chopperfest in Dec..........

to me THAT is the point - the fact that these guys spend all the time and energy on making cool cars that they actually take out and DRIVE.....

Piero could totally leave the Live Wire behind velvet ropes - but he rides that thing hard -

that is cool to me and really what this whole scene is about............or that is what I THOUGHT it was about......

is it really about who did what color first?

well I guess Henry Ford should be rolling in his grave with all those flat black cars I see at all the shows

and yes I get it that the Sling is supposed to be a unique piece - but there are variations on everything - Pie Wagon Beer Wagon Paddy Wagon - they are all somewhat derivitaive.........

and as someone else on here said - like the great Rodney King "cant we all just get along"

ledfords ford looked good.....that push button shifter has got to be one of the coolest things i have ever seen. i think it made the latest Rod and Kulture Deluxe or something similar. good to see local valley cars "at the big show".

nice pics. thanks for laying them out like that. its nice to see that kinda organization.

im gonna have to side with dan on this. its a cool car, but i would have felt uncomfortable with the similarities in the paint.

  26. Yup Cool car but your "friends" should have told you to paint it a different color.

The only way I see to resolve this debate is a heads up drag between the two cars. Meet you out at Paradise Road...
