I picked up a 325 dodge poly engine and I cant get it to run. It cranks over fine but as soon as one cylinder fires, it kicks the starter gear out - disengaugeing it from the flywheel. I have disassembled the starter a few times and there is a way to make the starter gear retreat less into the starter, but if i do that the gear is always engauged with the the flywheel ring gear - energized or not. and ideas? Thanks, Pax
I don't know how to help ya... This is just a poly bump, cuz I'm a fan... I have a '64 poly 318 in my model A sedan.... Good Luck! Jay
I think it is starting on the resistor by pass and that kicks the starter out. See if you have voltage to the coil with the ing. on and the engine off
The engine isnt in anything, I had a jumper supplying 12v to the coil... even though it should go through a resistor first. It's got a remote solenoid that I'm energizing with a start button. I just searched Napaonline and couldnt find anything more than brushes, brush springs and bushings. *to add a bit more, when the engine fires and kicks the starter gear out I can still hear the starter buzzing at full speed, its just not engauged to the flywheel anymore. a couple pics to drum up some business: for later in life.
Weak Bendix drive, spring per your description. Might be as well off to replace the whole stater, if you can get one reasonable. Good luck.
Anyone near Sacramento have a 315/325 starter for sale? or anyone anywhere for that matter? Thanks, -Pax
