These are pictures of cars placed along a river bank in order to lessen wave erosion. A couple of weeks ago, the power company opened the dam in order to clean and maintain it. This was reportedly the lowest water level in twenty years. Got some pretty cool pics out of it, it almost makes me want to become an environmentalist so I'd have an excuse to pull them all out, then again they do look good there.
Here are a few more pics. They closed the dam last week, so rooflines are about all you can see again. Enjoy.
Even that DeSoto lost it's grille. They must have dumped those in the late 60s or early 70s I'd say, given how new some of them are.
That used to be pretty common. Old cars dumped in rivers or gullys to stop erosion. I recall seeing cars dating back to the 20's back in the 60's ..... even pulled a few out back in the day.
There is a lock & dam about 2 miles from me on the Ohio River. I have heard stories about them putting a couple of hundred cars in below the dam to fill in a couple of holes in the bank. This was back in the mid 60's. The people that told me about it said they just dropped them in whole.
very common. I grew up in a town criss crossed by multiple rivers. I've been told by the local old timers that the dikes they built on the river banks were stacks of cars with dirt piled over them.....
There is a river near my town the same way. There has to be near a hundred cars lining the bank. There is even a part of the river with buses in it.
dude thats a freaking shame to see american history sitting at the bottom of the river. If it was me I'd take those cars out
You guys shouldn't feel bad about those cars being used like that. Had they not been droped into the riverbed like that, they most likely would have been crushed into cubes and melted down. At least this way we still have something cool to look at and just maybe few parts can be saved.
like I said in the life mag thread I found a river like this on the outskirts on Indy Kasnas,I did score a bunch of 54 chevy teeth and tons of other parts....they are out there...oh so were the damn snakes
