Well I talked to the builder of the car Stephen Warling today. He had all sorts of good info about the car. He found it in a barn yard as someone else' unfinished hot rod in 1957. And it had that dropped axle under it then. He said the car had been sitting for 8 years already then. So the car could date back to the post war era. He found the grill shell off of a 32 ford in a junkyard for 15 bucks. He painted the car a shade of 59 chrysler red. He also drove it up to the Detroit nationals in 1959. He also said that the car was originally built with a DeSoto hemi with a 3 speed, and a columbia 2 speed rear end. then he sold the car to tom in 61 not 64. That is when Tom put the 383 in it shorly after he purchased it in lat 61 or 62.

I tend to agree! That whole '60s look is pretty cool.

  15. The 383 appears to be a 1964-1967 version... the heads are a dead giveaway. I'll bet you the last three digits of those heads' casting number are 516. The engine code stamped into the block near the distributor will confirm the model year.

Regardless, you got yourself one hell of a find! I wish I could be that lucky.

I agree, or at the very least, keep the slots with the car forever. I'd hate to see original parts of the car get swapped out to look more "period correct".

Great story and a very cool car, I recently got a '51 Merc I've been after for about 4 years, feels good after all that time.

Great find and great story! Persistence does pay off, thanks for sharing with us.

  18. The entire car looks like a low-budget bad porno movie... I'll give you $500 for it... and I'll call you back in a few weeks to see if your interested... :)

j/k... it's a neat old late 60's home-brewed ride... I love small details... there's plenty in this one photo alone and frankly I really dig the air cleaners... the interior not so much... but the whole theme works. congrats!

Wow very nice rod to get after all the anticipation.

I like the period perfect parts and interior that have remained together. I wonder what the thinking was with sliding the body forward on the frame??

congrats on your merc. I get what a few people have said about the slots, they will never be sold. In fact they will probably end up on another car I own. But who knows, i have never liked slots myself...It makes the car look too 70s I think. Trust me it will look even more badass with whitewall cheaters and reversed merc wheels.

I noticed that too, actually the body is where it should be but the rear end is a couple inches too far back....this may stay the way it is...it may change but I need to get it on the ground with some good tires that hold air and see how it looks...Its alot more noticable with those square tires. But the chances are Im going to leave it where it is, it looks kind of cool.

always awesome when cars like this are saved! Too many times are nice cars crushed with the "im gonna fix dat up someday" BS, then the next time you call or go by, they say "oh that piece of junk? I scrapped it for 62.00"

  26. You're probably getting the hell pestered out of you for pictures, but close ups of all the small interesting details would go along way toward authentic old school documentation of "how it was done" for those of us that would like to duplicate it...they'd be invaluable. I'd also try to dig up old owner/builders and dig up as much of it's history as I possibly could. I am absolutely awestruck with your find. If it were me, it would take me a year to get it cleaned up...I wouldn't want to overlook ANYthing on the way to cleaning it up. I'd probably knock a wall out, and have it put right next to my bed...just the way it is....:D

Very nice find, I hear people say this type of stuff (live right, horseshoe, etc.) all the time to me. You make your own luck, he was persistant and followed up on a lead and had cash in hand. All recipes for "good luck."
