A friend sent me the following write up: This is the 1936 Ford Coupe built for and owned by Allegheny Ludlum Steel. This is 1 of only 4 in existence and is the only one currently in running & in roadworthy condition. More information of the history on these automobiles can be found at Allegheny Ludlum's website: http://www.alleghenyludlum.com/pages/companyinfo/stainlesscars.asp
I knew about the 36 but didn't know about the Tbird or Lincoln. Quite the metal finishing on all of them
I took these shots at the Eyes on Design Concourse event at the Edsel Ford estate this past June. Wonderful event Crazy that there has been so many posts on these cars lately
Actually Ford built quite a few aluminum bodied cars, sadly, most were Fordors and wooden structured. Some Centerdoors may have been aluminum bodied. Ford was into advanced metallurgy in chassis and body parts, a real innovator in the low-price car field.
those are damn sweet cars... im not sure why they didnt pursue this metal more after discovering how rust free and durable it is..
These cars were an exercise in promotion for the steel company and Ford. The cars had only stainless outer panels. The floorboards etc. were just like all the others ever made. Some SS survivors had rotten floors left in them when found. Working with stainless was substantially more expensive than mild steel in those early days and the public, then as now, don't want to all be riding around in cookie cutter cars without color. At least one of the SS 36 Fords was found painted.
Come on guys - Do your searches before posting, there are at least 4 other threads on these Stainless Fords
I thought this one was different when they said coupe. looks very much like a 2 door sedan doesn't it
If new threads are not allowed how are we to learn anything new? Besides the archives are pretty lonely. And don't bother flaming me, it has already been done. Do a search !! Regards, Twobit
