Really? I agree on the rust... everything else you mentioned I could find in any of the little books. Especially the leaks. :D

My car is rusty and a piece of crap. But it's not worth fixing "right" and I would rather see its true condition than a bunch of glossy paint on it. It is safe and roadworthy. I'm working on my house this summer and about to get deep into my nice, beautiful rust-free 1957 Chrysler, hope you guys approve of it when it's done. ;)

For the record - I'm not sensitive about anything you guys have said. It's just a cheap car to have fun with. I like shiny cars too! But I have to say that this car does draw a lot of attention, lol.

I'm IN! I've pretty much given up on "shows". Just a lot of rusted junk and PLUS sized models.

It's not rusty, or beat up car's, its' the gaudy stuff that is hard to take. That baby blue wagon is totally cool mister.

Perfectly said Drew....same boat here. But we're in the minority I'm sure.....

I wish I had a dollar for every time this subject comes up......then I could afford to build a "traditional" car that would be accepted here.....

Count me in if your have me? i was around in the 60s and NEVER saw a primer car NEVER! And as for rust your buds would have made you fell like shit with a rust bucket. So i dont get that whole thing. So at 53 count me in
I would take my Glass coupe over a rust bucket anytime. Now dont get me wrong i would have loved a steel 32 3 window but at 20k for a body that needs 10k of body work hmmm, I think not for me now. 2 kids in College . I am just lucky to have built what i did.

The unfinished, plastic rat, skull ornamented, no floor board trend is comeing to an end. The quality of the cars at this and other shows is getting better every year.

  8. My car will never look any better:mad::p:D, or nipplier:cool:. PS-this was by far the best Primers. You guys are really starting to step it up. Good work. Hot Rodding's about progress, and improvement;)

  9. Did you win "Best of Show"?

There were no trophies- the fun was just being a part of it ;)

Can't say the event made money- but it didn't lose any either. :)

You don't get much better than that. Nice car!

  13. 50Fraud, at the risk of being disrespectful, and by saying this, I am not endorsing the kind of cars you were talking about....

But if you open a thread called "Primer Nats pics"

Did you expect to see a lot of shiny cars?

I'm tired of cute ducks! Geese are cool. Ya ever seen a duck necked mirror? Ducks are stupid......unless their painted.

I have a feeling this thread is going to get shut down soon,... seriously its a bitchin show on a holiday weekend within a couple hundred feet from one of the only beaches in So. Cal that still has an old school feel and isnt full of fags! If you dont like it, dont go,or better yet, start your own show (not easy)! Remember if everyone was the same you couldnt be the Nazi's you are ;)

  16. I hope it don't get shut down. It's a great show (one of the BEST), and deserves to get talked "up"!

Ya I agree with you Groucho, but it just always seems like whenever there is a thread that builds up alot of controversy its not long before its closed.

Did anyone get a picture of the douche bag at the show who had a dingleball covered flashing emergency light on the roof of his car? <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; So here is the question - what is the HAMB style? Seems to me it isn't so well defined anymore. I'm not so sure we all have the same definition of traditional here - actually, it is obviously we don't from all the arguing.

keep in mind that the pics you see posted only represent the cars that especially interested the person taking the pictures in one way or another, and that there were BAZILLIONS more at the show that aren't shown here. The Primer Nats is a show with diversity, but they keep a pretty good handle on keeping poorly built, poorly designed cars out. You really can't judge a show by looking at the pictures posted here, but even if you did, these cars are pretty damn amazing!

What seemed to be underrepresented at the show were clean, pre-war styled As and dueces (there were some, just not a lot) and period gassers (again, there w60sere a few). Lots of customs, though.

One thing about this year is the BIKES were especially outstanding! Especially the dirt trackers! I was in Triumph/JAWA heaven.

I go to about a dozen shows a year, and this one is always one of my favs.

Thanks to those who posted pics, by the way. Nice stuff.

  20. I'm thinking that witnessing this scene would've been worth the price of admission alone. I'm guessing Groucho had to yell over the music and be quiet enough for her not to hear him screaming in Bob's ear, "NIPPLE!!! TAKE THE FUCKING PICTURE ALREADY! FUCKING ZOOM NIPPLE, FUCKING BOB! and so on ..."

There is no answer to the underlying issue. There are too many variables. There are too many cars. There are too many people. It's overload. In that case, it's usually nice to see something unfucked with and simple, such as a girl-next-door type of woman and a relatively clean survivor/stocker.

And, I appreciate old cars more when I see them on the street or by a barn. They're the neat minority then, instead of the overwhelming majority.

And, and, gawdy sums up a lot of it nicely.

    Thanks,
    Kurt

Yeah, but where it gets interesting is when time goes by and people feel nostalgic, hot rodding must ALSO include a mix of tradition. If it was PURELY about progress and improvement, we wouldn't be dicking around with this old stuff. That's the rub (and also the cause of the most dispute on the HAMB), some are very strict about their traditional cars, some like the spirit of tradition, and some are just up for the latest trends (followers).

    drama.

first of all, things are never pure. traditional today is just ones attempt at defining what it means in their own minds-- an individual translation of history.

second of all...... cars that may not have been show worthy back in the day are in shows today because they are very uncommon... you just dont see them much on the roads nowadays.

i like a lot of the cars at primer nationals. i'm ok with the fact that many cars are not perfect translations of traditional. a lot of the cars are ugly...... but then again, i'd rather see those ugly cars than most of the other cars outside the show.

  23. I agree with much of what everyone posting here has to say, mostly that cars, finished or not, painted or rusted are their expression of what they see in a car. Many, and in the last few years many, many, many don't apeal to me, however, I do appreciate the thought, creativity and workmanship in most of the cars. An unsafe rust bucket thrown together to shock people is not a traditional rod. A finished car, shinny paint or primer, can be old school. I grew up in St. Louis (Mo.) and no one I knew drove a rusted car, but due to limited funds would drive a primered car with a finished, functional interior and safe to drive. Only a few guys I knew could afford a shinny finish, they had "55, '56 or '57 Chevy's. The rest of us did the best we could to have a car to drive to school, work and if we couldn't use the "family" car, go on a date. To me this is "old school" and acceptable as HAMB approriate cars.

I Like Old Cars. I drive my 56' daily. How bout your "perfect" cars? Are they still earning their keep. Or are they the "magic duster, mothers in the trunk" type of rides.

BTW 50Fraud, Love your vickys. Not this thread.

I couldn't agree more. I attend Good Guys at Del Mar every year not to complain about all the billet crap but to enjoy the old tin. I have to search for the cars I like which makes the experience last longer and gives me a "Mission" to accomplish. If all the cars that fit my style were lined up in a row, it wouldn't be the same.

Looking back at my youth even long before I could drive, I remember primered cars and rods. The nice painted ones belonged to someone who had money. Common to see a car shaved with primer covering the area as if ready for paint. No automatic trans. were acceptable, 4 doors were taboo (it was your dads old car), white walls were the thing still but fading out. Fords were #1, Chev. #2 but anything else was not looked on with favor till mid 50's. One thing I do not remember is Rust, it was sanded off and primered and then hopefully painted. I think maybe a new catagory other than just Traditional Rod, Street Rod is in order for those that like rust. One thing I must say is the creativity of useing or making unusal parts is amazing at these events rather than cookie cutter stuff ordered out of a catalog.

I think you are confused as to what "traditional" is. What you described seems to be more OSR/Rebel Rods, well except for the floor shifter on a custom, I got one of those.... :D:D:D

I like it, I'll use it liberally.

I agree as well... very different.

I'll see your ducks and raise you a feral cat colony...

Hmmm... great way to look at it. I look at gay guys the same way... more more more... takes two guys out of the hunt for women...

I am an old fart..........dont remember anything close in my day to the majority of whats beng built today.......certain "rules" were laid down {unwritten} many ions back, and to be "traditional" they must be followed. that being said there are many of the "new wave traditional cars" that i do admire. But i guess i am stuck in a "time warp" for my tastes will always be "the real old school".

so sign me up for the old farts club i guess !
