Man that's a great shot of Nicholson blasting off the line. Darn near says what it was 'all about' in '65.

 

Montgomery is still racing that Plymouth. Looks great and runs, strong always a crowd favorite.

I wondered the exact same thing about that yellow Bel Air ... but it looks to have a Jenkins Competition sign on the rear QP. Maybe this is the ex-Northwind or the OR '62 car?

The "Hey Man" '59 Chevy is there too.

Sorry, don't recognize the type of wheels on the Corvette. The track is Atco, NJ though.

You really threw me for a loop on that one Joel. I was SURE that was E-town, back when the pits were on the right side.

That yellow '62 couldn't have been the Northwind or OR#2. We know how the paint changed on the Northwind before it went roundy-round, and there was never any evidence of yellow on OR#2. That's my understanding anyway.

Tommy McCroan Auto Sales car from Garland, TX and the driver may have been Rafael Shields. Would love to see the snapshot. I've only seen maybe 2-3 shots of the car, never one in color. One is racing against Dick Harrell's '64 Chevelle.

I always thought this was a good looking car until they cut the roof off.

 

I'm not a fan of roadster F/X-Funny cars and I felt the same way when I saw pictures of the car without the roof ... until I saw it in person at some of the big F/X meets at Cecil Co., MD back then. The roadster was very exciting to watch, fast and it did look pretty good in the flesh.

This pic's been around forever, but it still gets my attention whenever I see it.

 

That is one of the pictures that put Dickie on the national map of drag racing. His idea was "If you know your gonna get beat, Load the trunk."

All I can make out is a Chevy Bowtie on the door with 4 or 5 characters in it. They're printed in an arch. The rectangular red panel on the rear quarter doesn't remind me of a Jenkins comp sticker. I've never seen a red version. ?

Just got back from the Indy NIA convention. I had some luck and took the overall eliminator win in a borrowed car (never drove it before). It's been a long time since I was in the saddle and it sure felt good. (not to mention, I was on Holy ground!)<O</O

Thanks on the info about the yellow Bel air.

 

The silver '64 is owned by Tom Payne of ILL. It's a 327 300hp, 4-spd, 4.11 posi. Runs pure stock races. All stock equip. including air cleaner, cast manifolds, etc. Runs low 14s on bias plys (with him driving). I also managed to get the awards for the most runs (12) and quickest reaction (.030).
The photo is a time trial run with my friend Bob Thompson from Columbus, IN. He bought that '62 in '66! Has a 454 in it.

 

Those 300/327 Impalas have always impressed me. BIG car and a small , short stroke engine with a smooth idle. Docile enough for Grandma to drive to church, yet they really HAUL with a 4-spd and some gear. They run stronger than I would expect.
