I just got my coil conversion kit for my v8-60. directions show a 6volt coil, since i just switched to 12 volt can i use a 12 volt coil?
Yes, you can but be sure to use the correct ballast resister in the system. Check the tech threads on this forum under ballast resister and you should be able to find the part number for the correct resister.
You should use a 12v coil, preferably with a ballast resistor. You can also use the 6 v coil with a 1.5 ohm or more ballast resistor if you want to. 12v coil is the better way to go though, will run cooler and better spark at higher rpm. I think that was probably positive ground originally so make sure you rewire for neg ground (reverse the terminals on the coil wires if using the original coil, many early coils were marked dist and ign, instead of + -)
I agree the 12v coil will work better and for the little bit of money it is a better choice but it is up to you.
