That car is to custom cars what gay porn is to the internet.

  6. Whether the styling is loved by everyone is irrelevant, I think. It deserves to be restored and shown in a museum as a styling exercise by one of the famous car designers of the fifties. Whether a private party will finance the restoration is another story, but I hope it is saved rather than disappear again into a garage.

I think it's cool as hell. And I understand that it's an important car but the price seems a little optomistic, considering it's going to need a lot of money spent to restore it properly.

I always hated this one- IMO not a single aspect of it is an improvement. The worst (I think) are the bumpers- just hanging there oblivious to the rest of the vehicle, design-wise. I agree it would be nice to see it restored, but it had better not be accompanied by glowing, gushing prose on how amazing this design 'improvement' was/is...

the bumpers and hood suck,,,,as do the square wheelwells,,,
but there are some neat ideas on that car,,(loewy did know a thing or two about design,,haha)
for its time, it was probably neat,,especially in its original color scheme of silver/green metallic......
i do think he's dreaming on his price though,,even though it is a historical piece,,

i basically posted it as an example of where styling was heading in the early 60s..
it kinda reminds me of something the alexander brothers could have done,,,(except for the ugly parts,,hahah)

I call bullshit. I wouldn't give 75 bucks for that ugly hunk of shit. The only way that car could be driven in public is to tint the windows or wear a paper grocery bag over your head.

I think Raymond must have been breaking some new ground with the crack pipe too back then while working on this one - UGLY! from front to back. I am glad he worked out most of the ugly stick before he kicked out the Avantis. Or maybe this was a covert attempt to make sure Cadillac was never a threat to Studebaker in some way.

I am sure glad someone else saw the Corvair resemblance. The Corvair looked much better though. My vote is ugly duckling.

Reminds me of a fat lady we called "Two Butts", You couldn't tell if she was comin' or goin'.

  24. ...and it can be yours for just $650,000 smack!

I bet Plowboy or Bass could fix what ails it. Maybe it should become the subject of the next Art Challenge. Somebody call Nate...

Ok so Bethoven went deaf, but I never heard of Loewy going blind......

He went from designing wonderful 50 Studebakers, the avanti, the clasic coke bottle and fountain machine, the Lucky Strike logo and the Penn RR streamliners and the GG1 Locomotive to that? Certainly doesn't show his balance, clean lines, or sense of whole. It just is not good design.

He did some work at GM but if this is an example of it, it certainly is representative of he good stuff.

Check out the links by PhatCaddy. It actually looks much better there. I see a Corvair and Dart mating in the ebay pics.
    Plowboy would probably improve it.

I think it is oddly suggestive of the '61-62 period when Mopar went mad on the styling front.
The '59 had such a wild and sleek rear shape, I would love to see one heavily cleaned up to free the shape from excess trim and with a less ponderous and lower hood rather than that extra grill up there...

  30. Can't anybody see a Winfield fade paintjob, lowered, and a set of reveresed chromies and WWWs?

I guess I have to get Photoshop cranked up again.
