I ran across this ad somewhere on the internet this morning. "1951 Mercury Coupe Autographed by George Barris! This is a one of a kind find! 1951 Mercury Coupe with 59,000 Original Miles and Autographed by George Barris! This full custom car has the original flathead V8 and 3 speed with overdrive, and was Autographed by George Barris. Pearl White with pin striping that is tastefully done. Nosed, Decked and Shaved with Diamond Pleated interior,Autographed by George Barris! For more information Call...."
Sure it was autographed by George Barris. Not the famous customizer, just some guy with the same name....
If I read the ad right, George autographed the car, he autographed the odometer, he autographed the flathead/OD trans and he autographed the pleated interior. Should'a taken the pen away from the guy!
And for only $39K it can be yours! Honestly, it either doesn't photograph well or it's simply not that impressive. Here's a photo I found of it:
GB may have DONE the interior! Diamond tuck velvet ... mmmmmm, 70s kitsch! I never much cared for velvet interiors
There's another one running around here in Texas. It was at the Coastal A's car show here in Corpus Christi a couple years ago. I've got pics somewhere around here but this car was a blue color and autographed near the radiator tin. The car was beautiful. I'll look for some pics and see if I can get them posted. By the way, the show I mentioned above is this weekend and starts on Friday running thru Sunday. It's a good little show and has been going on for 15-20 years.
Barris autographs are becoming like Barris crests were in the 50's...If he stands next to it to long, it ends up autographed.
You know George Barris... and his kids George Barris, George Barris, George Barris, George Barris, George Barris, and George Barris. I love the grill he sells.
Would it be worth more if it wasn't vandalized? Maybe the seller is just being as honest as he can about the damage.
