my 61 galaxie 4door work in progress. Got the 4 door because i dont like the 2 door 61 post. i like the 62 though. Will have this beotch lowered another 4 inches, repainted the original green w/ metal flake. And a real white top. but for now its just a daily driver.

Thanks for asking us to "Show Off" our Galactic Warriors. Here's my '60 Sunliner factory High Performance 352-360 horsepower. I've got the original 352HP stashed under the work bench awaiting its revival. For the the time being the big Drop-Top is powered by a '63 427 backed by the original Borg Warner T-85 with Overdrive. The O.D. allows me to run quite nicely with 4.56s out back. And it does run okay for a 4,400 lb. sled - 14.5/99 mph this past summer at the local Spokane drag strip. I'm installing my tried, true and trusty FoMoCo tri power on it this winter. Oh and I still have the factory column shifter which ain't the best for power shifting but it gets through the gears.

Sorry about that picture I just posted with my response.....I couldn't get the one I wanted to attach! It was a shot from a friend's camera at last summer's Goodguys show here in Spokane. So I meant to attach another but clicked the one of the S'liner at the drag strip at night. Very dark and difficult to see but what you might see is the car I was running against - an '06 Mustang GT. That's mine too with my son driving. The 'Liner won! Once. I had a great reaction time. The next time, the new car got me. But it's close. I'll attempt to attach one more but I actually don't think I've got a good shot that'll work yet. I know, I'll show you how the car looked as found in a barn in '82.

I apologize for not being able to attach to pic I want of my '60 as it is now. But I'll attach a pic of my, prior to the '60, '61 Starliner. It was a factory 292/cruiso that was miserable to drive with that powertrain. Out the Y block came replaced by a 428CJ/C-6 that ran very nicely. Eventually we installed a 427 dressed like a '61 HP390 tri power 401 horse car, and a top loader 4 speed. The trophies were for drag racing wins not shows. Not that there's anything wrong with lawn/parking lot shows or whatever, my sons and I prefer to run 'em at the strip.

 

Show1off's '60 wagon inspired me to post just one more. This one was recently acquired from the second owner. It's obviosuly a '63 but what's rare/weird is that its factory equipped with XL style interior - buckets, console, floor controlled shifter and the deluxe door panels/handles. Just an -X- code car. This one belongs to my 29 year old son. It will eventually be powered by the '63 427 in the '60 Sunliner with the tri power making it look like a 406/405 horse car. We haven't decided whether to keep the BW-T-85 tranny(Which I have a brand new Hurst Synchro Lok shifter for) or to go with a CJ R code servo C-6. Whatever tranny, it'll have to run consistently well on a drag strip. I haven't weighed this beast yet but it's got to be over 4,500 lbs.

Oh, sorry about the fuzzy dice...the picture was taken the day we brought the Country Squire XL home and I forgot to trash them before the shot. The '66 Galaxie(with Ford logo center cap- NOT Mustang)steering wheel and the late '50s era Dixco tach all came with the deal. The Dixco will be replaced by a '60s era Sun, the Dixco will be at home mounted on the steering column of my '49 Olds 88 Coupe. And there'll be no fuzzy dice in the Olds either.

 

Hey Bad Rod, was your Dad's '60 HP Starliner featured in the good old Super Ford magazine many years ago? The old Super Ford with John Paradise as owner/publisher. It was a great story, actually I still have it stashed in my car magazine pile somewhere, about a guy who had bought a 352 '59 that was rather disappointing performance wise but he bought a new '60 with the new Total Performance 352HP360 package.
An interesting thing about the '60 and '61 HP packages is that they were not built with a unique VIN engine code. Honestly, inspite of what you read in way too many publications. For '60, an HP car was Special Order built with a -Y- engine code just like a standard 352-4V 300 horse, and for '61, an HP car was again Special Order built with a -Z- code just like a standard performance 390-4V. But the HP cars for both years featured Total Performance powertrains front to back, i.e., 3/8" fuel line, station wagon brakes, 4 pinion diff., HD springs and shocks. And of course all the HP engine features.

My over infatuation with the FE started in '61 when my older neighbor traded in his '60 Impala 348 for a brand new Sunliner with tri power 390HP/401, stick & O.D. He'd lost a drag race with his Impala to a '60 Starliner which I always assumed was probably a 352HP.

I "think" I'm attaching a picture of me changing plugs before making a few blast down the local strip last summer. I still seem to enjoy changing from street BF32's to BF 22's on a hot engine.

 

Okay so that wasn't me changing spark plugs on my Sunliner but a better picture of the true '60-'61 HP head - COAE-6090-D. Check out those 58cc combustion chambers. Just try running a set of those on your flat top CJ on today's fuels! I get by running those heads on my 427 by using FoMoCo forged C3J Industrial/Marine pistons that feature a dish that provides a reasonable 10.5 CR.

I want to say that it has been a real pleasure to have a look at so many great full size '60-'64 Fords in this thread. Lots of different styles and looks. All great. It's also nice to read posts from folks who know what their talkin' about when it comes to the origins of the FoMoCo Total Performance years, '60 & '61.

62 Mercurys are pretty much a Galaxie with a different nose and tail panel/upper rear quarters. A 60-63 Galaxie 2-door h/t would look great with no more mods than I've done with my car (Bellflowers, dropped, and chrome reverses)
