What should the oil presure be on a stock 60's 283? A friend just put one in his project and he wants to make sure it is OK.

    Thanks

Before I pulled my 57 's 283 out it would have 30-40 psi running 10-15 at idle. This was with many many miles though.

Good rule of thumb is 10 psi for every 1000RPM

My 57 Nomad has about 5,000 on rebuilt stock 283. A little over 40 at highway speeds and never goes under 15 at idle in traffic while hot.

There is a thing as too much pressure - but it usually is at the top end - too much at idle only wastes a tiny little bit of gas driving the oil pump more than it needs to... But 20 PSI isn't excessive - it's about "on" for a good low mileage/fresh engine - I've had guys put HV pumps in TIGHT engines and get 50-60 PSI at idle HOT... now that's excessive - it was on the pressure bypass already at like 1200 RPM! - All that pressure did was waste engine HP by making the pump work harder than necessary.

I would think somewhere around 12-15psi at idle hot is pretty good....what motor oil weight are you using? That'll affect it too

Thanks for the info. It is 20 at idle and 40 when driving.

My truck idles at about 15 psi hot and around 45 on the road.
