Finally we got some decent temperatures here and I decided to indoktrinate my stepchild into moore motorsport. We've been to dragracing and car meets and she's clearly interested in cars, one of our favorite movies are Cars of course. The drag racing starts whitin a few weeks so our only option this weekend was circle track racing, but hey, just as it moves our sounds I and her are happy. So, of we went and Emma (8) had a seat and started to discuss what we saw. She didn't like mc racing , niether do I, and Porsches was cooler then touring cars. At the free practice there were som incidents and she said "wonder if they put oil on the track", I said why do you think that? She said"Look at the flag stupid".... OK I didn't think of that and asked her "who do you know which flag is for what" and she replied, Cars of course... d'oh. Later she said she want's to work with racing and I said Fine, as long as it keeps you from horses. I am a proud step dad, and we will take the -58 to as many car meets we can this summer Anyone with simular stories?
That's cool! My kids love the 53, almost every day when I leave for work my 4 year old twins ask me if I can pick them up from school in the Hot Rod! My 10 year old daughter grew up in the garage. She had to do a paper for school about time spent with her parents, well she wrote 2 pages about how we went xmas shopping in the merc and then had lunch at the local drive in (sycamore)...she said it was one day she will never forget..............me neither!!
I cant get out of the driveway without my two boys wanting to go for a ride. I shouldnt bitch ,at least they arent sitting in front of this computer or a video game.
Get her a quarter midget or a junior dragster, and she will be hooked for life! It's true, they are both expensive sports, but it's not about always winning or having the fastest (most money spent) car, but the fun your whole family will have will be priceless memories for her whole lifetime. I think it's awesome that you want to get her involved. Your a cool dad!
My wife took this pic today. My 5 year old granddaughter's first ride in the hot rod. When she was about 2 I took her down to see the car. I asked if she wanted a ride someday. She looked kind of funny, smiled and said DRIVE. <img src=http://www.enter.net/photoalbum/data/longt/329374.jpg> Bill
My 3 y/o is pretty into the whole transport thing, loves going out in my Olds and gets pretty pissed if I go and he doesn't. We hit the nostalgia drags the other day and hit up a few folks I know for sits in their cars.
Both my 6 and 3 yr. old love helping me work. Mainly the fun stuff like painting. When it comes time to clean or sand, no where to be found. I rarely go to a show without them.
I feel like a junior dragster is un-avoidable. Think it's the coolest way to enjoy hotrodding with the kids, at least in my mind. We have this track an hour drive away from home and it's like our destiny to go there.
I'm glad my dad let me hang out in the garage with him- some of the best time spent is with him in the garage...and now I can teach him a few things too! I'm excited for the day when I can pick up my kids from scool in the '40...It'll be a while though!
start them young, yep i agree, my 3 (15, 11 and going to be 3), two older boys take turns helping the old man cause they cant stand each other, but my 3 yr old loves to be with her daddy, built my race car last year and shes in the drivers seat and figured out how to put my cam lock 5pt harness on, and locked it, then she was to short to drive so its off and to the wheel she goes shiftin them gears
I finally convinced my sister to let me take my nephew for a ride in my MGs this year, because he won't stop talking about them! He knows them all by color, and calls them either the "coot (cute) cars" or the "fast cars." I just got the Midget out of the garage this past weekend, so it's only a matter of time!
I have a 9 year old across the street that comes over every time the garage door opens. I gave him a bunch of Allenite tools, wrenches, sockets and ratchets my folks bought for me when I was about his age plus a bunch of surplused screw drivers and pliers etc. If I go someplace and a kid wants to sit in the car they are most certainly welcome to. I'll bet the '56 has had almost as many pictures taken with little kids as the pony ride at the fair. I carry an RC version of the 56 and a small Radio Flyer wagon too that I let them play with also. You can't get kids interested in mechanical things early enough.
Some of the best times I can remember is being in the garage with my dad. I still just love hanging out with him in the garage. The smells and the sounds always bring back a ton of memories. Now my kids are hanging out with me in the shop...Just love it.
That is very cool!! I hope his parents appreciate what you do for their son. I have done a similar thing for a good friend of mines son and it has helped him get off of the couch and stop hanging out with the wrong crowd as well he is now 16 and taking a welding class and looking for his first hot rod project. Chris
My Son Is Two Now And Everytme I Set Foot Out Of His Sight He Runs To The Garage Screaming Daddy Grage(thats How It Sounds)and Then He Has To Wrench On His Pedal Car Im Building For Him!he Actually Is Using Tools Now(trying Anyway)and Everytime We Leave The House He Throws A Fit Unless We Take The 55!im Soooo Lucky!!!!
Our kids grew up in hot rods, now we have grandchildren growing up in hot rods too. It's a wonderful way to spend time as a family.
cool thread , i have a lot of good childhood memories from riding around with my dad and granddad and i try and to do the same with my own grandkids .. this was last summer and the only kid friendly ride i had running , hopefully this summer they will get to ride around with pops in the 37..
These are from the weekly Spangles meet last week. He's 2 1/2 and ALWAYS wants to ride in the "green car!" If the wife and i can't find him anywhere, we usually can find him playing in it in the garage
bmweuro that pic of your little girl welding is awesome i know grown up guys that cant weld that good good to teach them while they are young instead of telling them to stay away while daddy is welding or dont look give em a hood and let them watch and learn
a large part of my hot-rod influence comes from trips to Speedway ( http://www.costamesaspeedway.net/ ). when i was a kid (80's/ early 90's) we used to go on vacation down here to disneyland and part of the trip included surfing and Speedway. that was usually one of the biggest thrills as a kid. (aside from living about 3 miles from the oakland coliseum and going to the GNRS every year since as far as i can remember). speedway is a great introduction, as it allows the kids to get up close and personal with the riders after it's all over--you can often times get auto's and pics of them sitting on the bikes. you can imagine my excitement when i found out my college girlfriend told me she was given a fender from a bike that broke after a speedway race. we're getting married in july.
The grandkids are more fun!!!!! Last summer we had the grandkid out she was on her knees looking out the rear window of the 46,and I looked in the rear view and I could see it was her mom,how times have changed.Irene told me to put seat belts in the back for the grandkids,I did russ
Thanks. They are very excited about going back to Bonneville this year. We are hoping to finish our 1922 Buick sedan with a flat head straight 8 in time for the trip.
I figure they both will be able to build their own cars at 16 and beat up the boys. that pic of your little girl welding is awesome i know grown up guys that cant weld that good good to teach them while they are young instead of telling them to stay away while daddy is welding or dont look give em a hood and let them watch and learn[/quote]
Emma, my 8 year old, asked me why I had to sell Belle (my 58 bel air) and I told her that we need the money if we want to go to Australia, where she's born. She offered all her savings if that meant we could keep Belle, how about that for a tear in your eye?? I love the pictures from the salt. OOOo I want to go there too.
My son Kody has been a part of my truck build from the begining. At three, he now refers to my truck as "his" and points to my 77 Blazer and says "thats your truck daddy". Any time he is not in a good mood we can go for a ride, get a "frossy" at Wendy's and all in the world is better. My daughter is now 1 1/2 and I cant keep her out of the garage. She looks at the cars and makes a growling sound imitating the engine. Her new place to play is in my 37 Plymouth Sedan. With another on the way I guess it's time to get another Hot Rod....they shouldn't have to share!
