I've been waiting a long time to do this. I've wanted a "real" hot rod for years but opportunity did not knock until a few weeks ago. Anyway, I took the coupe apart and needed a way to move it around so I can get things in and out of the shop. I built a body dollie of sorts. It has 6 x 6 legs and 2 x 6 frame and has a piece of 3/4 inch plywood for a top. I'll be able to use it as a mobile table later for other things. So next I need some frame rails. I went to the metal supplier and bought some 2 x 4 and 2 x 3 , 1/8th wall tubing. I made a template for the frame horns and used it as a guide for my plasma cutter. cut, cut, cut, burn, burn, burn....Viola! tack , tack , tack , weld , weld , weld.... Time for a shower and clean the black boogers out of my nose....Later!
Thanks Guys! Today is another day of cutting and welding and fitting and figgering.....not nesessarily in that order.
The black boogers concept is a secret code amongst builders so, don't let the secret out or we'll send Vito and da boys over for a visit?
Looks like you are set up for some serious rod building. I've got lath and mill envy. Your frame is quite a peice of work. Did you make the "X" members by spliting rectangular tubing. I see a large hole saw in the mill. Is that what you used to ventelate the crossmember and the "X" frame?
Correct and correct.....The "ventilation" holes were copied from a 39 frame I have. I was hoping to be able to use the 39 x-member but it is too deep. If I had a 32 frame it would work perfectly!...thanks for the kind words!
and he has put a lot of thought into it too. a step above your "average" 2x3" rails thats for sure. i like it
that is one good looking chassis, and i love your garage!! keep us posted and if i get this A model im looking at i will look you up for some help and dimensions on a frame.
Updates for today.... I mocked up, uh mock upped .....put the body on for the first time.....it even seemed to fit with a little trimming of the rear subrails. They're pooched anyways so I'm going to have to make some up or something.
I think you need a bigger chain hoist!!! haha just kidding The build is looking Great. I love the frame work, and those front horns look good as well. Any more in depth pics of the plasma cutting and cleaning up of them? Will
Sorry no better shots of me plasma cutting.....hard to hold the camera and cut at the same time. I should get a helmet cam like the NASCAR guys have
your doing a bad ass job on the coupe, keep us posted with more pics as you go,this is going to be a nice build to watch, keep up the good work jethro...........richie.......
Yeah I have that same problem. It seems that I never have enough hands to do things with. And no one is ever around when I am building something cool, until it is done. lol i have had a few good shots taken in the last couple of months by some buddies when building their jeep bumpers though. Anyhow Killer Build I can not wait to really get on mine and get moving with it. I have 2 houses I have to get finished first.
