This video has made the rounds through the internet a few times the past year or so and while I've always loved the visuals, the video quality always left me disappointed. As luck would have it, I recently stumbled upon a good copy and saw it as the...

To read the rest of this blog entry from The Jalopy Journal, click here.
Hey! Notice in the 9th or 10th second of the video the dragster in the left lane. Is that not an Allison V12 aircraft engined car? There were quite a few of these in the early days of drag racing. The engine weight/horsepower ratio as well of relative rarity and expense of these engines saw their demise.
I noticed that, too - sure looks like an Allison! Still see them once in a while in the pulling tractors... Cool video - lots of big (legendary) names racing that day! Malcolm

Hey, no motor homes along the east fence, spectator stands on both sides and behind the start. No guard rail, no cement barrier, good ol' chain link fence. What memories. Should be a Calif. historical site. First time for me was '66, they had hay bales then,What a wonderful carefree time. GOD bless the SMOKERS, 50 years this weekend, Wow, Thanks Ryan for stoking us up, OLY The cancer car lives Give to cancer research
Ive watched it 3 times already... cant get enough! I cant help but think what ETs they could run if they had good tires.
Ryan, Thanks a bunch for sharing the video. I "wasted" a big chunk of my youth racing at Alton Dragway (IL) in the late 60's. Got to see all the big name dragsters, gassers and fuel altereds run, but don't have a single photo or video of any of it. The Jalopy Journal Video Player is pretty cool.
That was GREAT!! Watchin it makes me wish I could step back in time and catch more of the action in person. Good on ya for posting it Ryan!
Damn Son...that was kewl as hell...Not that your others weren't good but that one tops it for a while in my book. I'm gonna watch again hehhee
I have an LP record made by Fleetwood Records of that very meet.I believe the announcer that day was Jon Lundberg(the Voice of Drag Racing).I think they have it re-issued on a CD and the recording quality was unreal. One of the highlights was Big John Mazmanian running his 61 Corvette.sounded like it was turning about 12 grand going by the microphones.
Crap... I can't watch it till I get home and I've got errands to run. This is the era that has truly captured my interest.
This video is from Alex Xydias' "The Hot Rod Story" and the audio is dubbed but authentic. I have it on VHS. The narrator is Alex himself. Anyway, if anyone wants to see more, try SoCal Speed Shop. I believe they sell the video, I thought I saw it in there last time.
Alex Xydias sent me this DVD and man do I thank him....you guys would love it. Thanks Ryan that was another awesome film.
