What engine is this? (Flathead 6)

I came across this motor in the garage I have to clean out. What is it?

 

Mopar Flathead 6

 

Looks like a Mopar 6 to me too. External oil pump, Intake/exaust on the passenger side, distributor is in the right spot too.

 

Motormounts are making me think it is from a late fifties (57-59????) car. I think all the earlier ones has the stamped front mount under the waterpump. At least my 53 does.

 

The plug spacing and head bolt location isn't right for a mopar 6

 

Is there supposed to be some type of markings on it somewhere? I'll have to get some engine degreaser and see if I can find any.

 

I was looking at that to. They look to close together.

What about Pontiac. Didn't smaller Buick's have a Flat 6 too?

 

Maybe its a Nash.

 

I see one in front of the oil fill tube. Should be markings on it some were.

Looks to be the one! Look at the thermostat housing.

^^^Look at the thermostat housing totally different. Not to mention the sparkplugs are spread way apart on the Hudson.

I think squirrel got it. What CI is that Stude? Looks tiny.

 

the Champion engine is tiny, mostly they are 169 cubes

 

169 ci Studebaker Champion motor! Believe it or not, they still make performance parts for them - alum. heads and dual intakes. They made them for a long time 40's to 60's I think. Only in the last couple of years before they went under did they replace it with an overhead valve version, but by then it was up to 185 ci or something like that.

 

A guy named Bill Cathcart builds up loads of great Champion 6's - he even offers them with 3/4 cams, dual carbs, porting , and other goodies for a reasonable price. He advertises in all the Stude pubs.

 

An easy way to identify it as a Studebaker engine is the one piece intake and exhaust manifold casting.

 

Thats a studebaker champion motor the crank pully and the slanted breather tub is the dead give away.
