OK, I'm stupid, how do you know at this age that they are identical and not fraternal? I mean, I never thought of it until I showed my wife and she asked me how you knew... They are perfect though and I love them holding hands. That is just precious. I'd love to be able to sleep like that for a little while. No stress lines, no worries, just mom and dad taking care of everything. Cool. Congrats.
We knew from the very first ultrasound when they confirmed she was pregnant. They are monochorionic dizygotic which roughly is med-speak for a shared placenta (mono) and 2 fetuses (dizygotic = 2 zygotes = twins). You can only get a shared placenta when a single egg splits, which means identical because they came from the same egg. If they were fraternal, they would've have come from 2 separate fertilized eggs and would have 2 separate placentas. Strange, but true. Identical twins are very rare and happen purely by chance. Fraternal twins are relatively more common (I'm a fraternal twin) and can run in families. Fraternal twins (and triplets, and quadruplets, and...) are becoming more common due to fertility drugs and women waiting until later in life to get pregnant when twinning is more likely. You wouldn't believe how many people have asked us if they were "natural twins".
Tell your Wife shes a clever person!! and for premi babys they sure look lovely and well!! Twins run in our family,my mums father was twin and my gran had two sets of twins (!) out of 17 kids... and several cousins have twins. No TV in those days.....
