Hub caps on traditional 50's hot rod

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by jrblack30, Jul 16, 2007.

  1. the 53 cad caps look great on anything.. esp of you paint the emblem up with lots of gloss. 55 buick looks great too.

my fav of all times is the 1960 buick delux caps, cant seem to find a solid picture right now... but they are amazing

The next car I build is gonna have '55 Olds spinner caps... I like the white lined background more.

Friend of mine had '56 Olds caps on his '49 Merc and they looked damn good.
"Saturns" as I've heard them called.

There were some pictures on here a little while back of a champagne '32 3w with some early Vette caps. It was way cool if someone out there can post some pictures.

This was the hot setup for coupes and roadsters in '56/'58. A set of '48 Merc. 15 in. rims painted body color. Bias ply 6.50-15 2 1/4 B. F. Goodrich "Silvertown" wide whites (8.20's on the rear) with '50 Ford beauty ring and Bell Auto deep dish "baldy" hubcaps.

  18. I know I've got a mag. with a Hot Rod wearing full '59 vette covers. It looks pretty sweet. I'll see if I can find it if someone else doesn't beat me to it.

  19. Saving these Stainless Steel 15 inch caps for a future project as they have no name on them. Who can ID them ?

  20. All the caps noted above were popular with the Caddy being the least used.

Chrome wheels became popular in my town - Ventura, California - about 58-59.
Usually run with a small and smooth moon cap.

When metalflake came in, quite a few Fiestas and Lancers had the background under the blades painted, usually metalflake.
    gold.
About 1958 I built up a set of 55 Buick wheelcovers by bolting a set of two blade knockoffs off a spoke wheel cover into the center hole after removing the red Buick emblems.
That was the only set of modified wheelcovers I saw in town.
    Good looking they were.
Ran em on my 50 Shoebox coupe.

Spoke wheel looking wheel covers were popular with the older stock car set, but I don't remember seeing any of them on peer group type cars.
Almost always an older guy did it and most of those I saw were parked at the golf course.
Kinda gilding the lilly on a classy expensive car . . . early Gold Chainers as it were.

Am I right in thinking the ripple bar caps like Tommy shows in the pic above are being re-pro'd in a full size wheel cover?
Or is the large hubcap it and I'm remembering incorrectly?

As for similar, but gennie wheel covers I remember cars of the 40's running these on 15" and probably 16" wheels.
Some were smooth and some had ripple bars
Since they were full coverage wheelcovers and not hubcaps no beauty rings required.

And then mags came to be....

  21. i do think that if your gonna run branded caps you should do it like Tom Branch's '32 amd habem match the motor $0.02

55 Plymouth. Had a set and put 61 Chevy spinners on them. Really liked the look.

  23. Steve,

The 57-58 Plymouth Fury covers I remember have a more recessed cone. I'm thinking of using them on my 57 Dodge truck. I'm not sure what you have but they look flatter. Very nice looking though.
