I used an 8" out of a '65 Comet. Widthwise it was a perfect fit. I had to grind off the old spring pads and weld some thinner ones on in the right place. It came with 3.25 gears which works well with the C4 I installed at the same time. You might also have to have the driveshaft end modified to match up to the new rear end.

    I just put an Explorer (95-01) 8.8 under my 51 shoe ...3:73 gears /31 spline /posi /discs/ $100.00 at the boneyard.
Need to move the pads out a little ( don't remember now but could measure) and overall measurement flange to flange was 1" less than stock.

An inch narrower? hmmm. how well would the discs fit with a notched frame? Planning to 4 link but heard discs were to bulky.

  4. Most Common...

    Non-OD 3.73

    OD 4.11

The 3.54 & 3.31 were for auto trans cars. Although I.m not sure about the 3.31.

3.31 was for Fordomatic cars in '51; that's what I have in mine. I doubt the 3.54 was used in any auto trans cars unless delivered in the Rockies or on special order.

OK now riddle me this, what was the OD ratio on the trans?

  7. 0.7?

I really should look at this sight when I'm at home and have my shop manual handy.

  8. I'll double check this, but I'm pretty sure the 3.54 was a standard ratio for the Fordomatic, maybe only in '49 & '50, anyone with a shop manual handy to verify this...

There was no Fordomatic in 49 and 50. 51 was first year, and as far as I know it mirros the Mercs...3.31.

As far as I know OD final drive gear is .6

What rear could be in a flathead, manual trans '50 ford? How weak is it and would it typically be a one-legger and possible gear ratios? Thanks

So, if I can find a 65 mustang rear that is 57 1/4", any reason I shouldn't just go for that vs. trying to track down a Maverick rear?

Anything to watch out for on a Mustang rear that is less of a pain to deal with than in a Maverick?

any 64-66 mustang's v8 rear will work..the only thing about the mustang rear is the leaf spring perches.perches are a bit to wide to use with stock shoebox leafs

Check availability of replacement drums before choosing. I understand that Maverick's are expensive, if available.
