Our Pyrennese likes to run, we cant let her go even tho we have 13 acres. When I was in college, SentinelTs pooch got rolled under a car while we all watched, $4000 bionic freakin dog after that.

Dogs rule, even the dumb ones, ours barks too much, runs at any chance and has allergies...........but she is with me in the shop every night while I work on the car!

Annie will be fine Kerry, money comes and goes faster than a good dog does.

 

You'll get the money back in other ways. Good luck with her and I would be suprised if she chases for tires again.

Don't question the bucks. Hell we spent...well never mind how much, lets just say well over a good paint job worth on an abused, starving and very sick Rottie. Weighed in at 42 pounds when we got her and now is at 100. She is now sleeping with the wife and other mutt in the bed and living very large. And yeah it was worth every damned penny and all of the heartache.

Now excuse me I need to go out and find the person who decided we all needed to keep pets as family and kick em in right square the nuts. Or thank em not sure which.

 

Good luck and keep a good thought. Coincidentally I have a dog named Annie (ShyAnn) too, A severely abused Great Dane rescue that is now battling cancer. They gave her 1 month to live back in sept. and it's now 4 months. I have her on a strict diet and am using herbs and other treatments, but she's worth every bit of trouble and expense. Sometimes we take them for granted, but when something like this happens it makes us realize how much they really are a part of our family. Hang in there, I'll keep her in my thoughts.
BTW my Annie also had badly broken front legs (probably got hit by a car too) and both healed crooked, but it doesn't slow her down a bit.

 

Man, I feel for you and your family. I've been on both sides of the pet and auto thing. I had to swerve into oncoming lanes this summer and still broke a poor beagle's leg. Then I had to go find the owner, both of us were nearly in tears.

Why can't stupid mean people chase after cars instead of our pets?

 

Kerry...you're a good kid. It shows too. You've got your priorities straight, in my book. Besides, what more does that old Poncho need? I think it's perfect! Hemi? 4 speed? Sheeeit, man! That old primered coupe will NEVER meet you at the driveway when you come home and lick your face because it loves you unconditionally.

GV, get over there on that rug and get your wife to rub your nose in the poop and you'll feel much better ! Poor old Schnauzer's eyesight is probably getting bad and that old green shag rug looks like grass now you ol meany !

 

My Bully pup broke his leg a while back to the tune of 3k. You can always make more money, but the laughs and good times spent with your family Shepard are priceless. Its just one of those things ya gotta do!

Kerry, Annie will be on the mend is short order. Try to break her of the chasing cars habit. We lost our oldest male Chihuahua in Mar 07 to a heart attack. He was my wife's guardian and is greatly missed. The youger male is trying hard to fill this void.

yeah my car would be taking a little bit longer nap in the garage too.

 

I heard from the vet about a half hour ago. Sounds like Annie's doing great! Surgery went very well. They were able to use pins and wires instead of having to use a plate. For it to really heal right she needs three weeks of crate rest, most of which will be spent at the vets. Whew. We're going to see her tomorrow morning.

30 years ago my shepherd-malamute got hit and shattered it's leg. Knowing I didn't have much money the vet suggested I consider putting him down 'cuz it was going to be expensive to fix. That dog spent every day with me at home and work for the next 12 years. I still consider that to be the best investment I've made in my entire life. Good call.

Kerry, sorry to hear about your dog. I'm sure the surgery will go well and you've got a friend at the vet's so that should help. If you have questions about it, or any aftercare, fell free to PM me and I'll help if I can. What kind of fractures did she have? Make sure to ask them about pain meds and stomach protectants and aftercare-you can do more earlier with plates than splints or intramedullary pins.

DogPatch, guess you're the only one who can decide if you got your money's worth. From your radiograph, it looks like your dog broke the end of the humerus (upper forelimb bone) off and split it as well since the big white blob looks like a lag screw holding the lower end together. It's no easy feat to get the ends together and back on like they did-all the arm muscles want to pull the bits toward the shoulder and there are some honkerin big nerves and arteries in the way of fixing things. If your 3500 included xrays, bloodwork, surgery, aftercare, bandages pain meds and follow-ups and was done by a surgical specialist, then that's a fair price. Do you have any idea how long your doctor trained to be able to do that? I agree it's a lot of money, but you would spend a bit more, you might say, if it was your arm that was being fixed. Same job would likely cost you $15K or more. No doubt, medicine is expensive, but you weren't ripped off. How's you dog doing?

Best of luck to everyone's pets. Vehicles and animals don't mix well. And for those of you with "hidden fences", I've seen many a dog take the hit to get out under the right circumstances. Make sure you train them well and keep the collar batteries fresh.

So sorry to hear about it, but as you said the vet thinks the leg is put back together well. Your expenditures on the dog will come back to you many times over in tail wags, kisses, companionship for your 2legged kids and family membership of your dog.

So the car stuff has to wait a while, it will still be there waiting for you.

 

Dogs are great...but at least your hot rod doesn't lie by the bed at night at lick it's ass!

My wife is a vet also. I went out with her last night at 2:45 a.m. A horse had slipped down a hill and got tangled up in barbed wire. Lot's of stitches but the horse will be o.k.


Dog owners may want to consider an invisible fence for their dogs. They work great. The dogs can still run around the yard to burn off excess energy. We have one and could not live without it. We have a high energy English Setter.

Heal Up Quick Annie - Quit chasing trucks!

Man my one dog broke her molars chewing on a bone - had to have surgery to remove the rest of the broken tooth. That weren't cheap either. Although it was cheaper than the option to have a fake tooth installed!

 

Hope your dog gets well soon, and I hope you have a containment plan in place. Dogs are awesome, but the reality is people get hurt & die every day swerving to avoid animals. Bad as it seems, the situation could've been a lot worse
