Finaly got this thing all together. It's been a while comming. It's gonna run like a scalded dog! (I hope!) It's a 62 vintage 283 bored .040 over with powerpack heads. It's got a comp cams 270, Offy tripower manifold and 3 94's. Should run and sound good. Hope you enjoy looking at it as much as I do!
that's the first pair of painted valve covers i have ever liked. that thing looks fast sitting there.
Thanks, I like it too. I did it that way because I got those Cal Custom valve covers dirt cheap because they looked like shit. So this was the solution I came up with to make them look good. Rather than spend more time and money than they are worth polishing. One day I'll get some nice ones and run them polished. I'd also like to get a set of original script ones and chrome them.
I have a same vintage 283 in my 35 Ford, only with an edelbrock streetmaster manifold and carb. I dig that little motor. Get's 20+ mpg on the open road.
do the powerpack heads make a difference on the 283? i ask because i just swapped in a 283 in my truck and i might have to run them.
Yes. bigger valves, higher compression. But improvment depends entirely on what heads are already on your 283.
Well, the motor cost me 200 bucks. I pulled it apart and put rings in it. They were 40. My Uncle did a bitchen 3 angle hand cut valve job. Freebee. The valves are new, they were 40 bucks. The cam, lifters, pushrods and valve springs are new. That was about 300. The manifold and carbs was the big expense. It was about 300 for the manifold and another 250 for the carbs and risers plus rebuilding them and installing new shafts. The pan, rocker covers assorted doodads......I guess all total I have about 1500 in it. Damn, I never thought about how much I had wrapped up in just the engine!
I guess we'll see once it's up and running! I would imagine so, the valves are bigger so it should breath easier.
Yes that is correct. I just got the setup from him the other day. I painted in between the fins to match the engine. Very nice stuff he sells. Well worth the money, and a hell of a nice guy to boot!
I forgot to add, NICE WORK! love that engine. I have a thing against the SBC's but yours is just purrfect!
All 283 heads have 1.72" intakes and 1.50" exhaust valves. Powerpack heads have a smaller combustion chamber volume for added compression, that's the only real difference between them and the standard 2-barrel 283 heads. I had a set of Powerpack heads that I added some 1.84" intake valves to, the 1.84" valves were originally made for a 305 head. Sweet 283 you've built up there Painterman.
Thanks man, and thanks for the lesson on heads. There are so many differences and combinations it's hard to keep track of it all.
