I know how much some of you HATE Volkswagens. So why not cut one up? I'm one cheap mofo so I scour Craigslist for free stuff all the time and I came up with 65 VW pan. I need the the front clip for a baja I'm building and I thought I'd scrap the rest. Then I got to thinking and nothing good ever comes of that. But... The Pan minus the front clip. Get the seat tracks out of the way so you can run a sawzall along the bottom edge. Make the cut. Once you've separated the tunnel from the pan you have to pull out all the tubing, rat shit, etc. German engineering. Cut hole and push out of the way."no vun vill ever zee it." The end result. Poorman's driveshaft tunnel. The reason I liked it was it's tall and narrow unlike one out of an american car which are wider and flatter. Plus I'm thinking why not use the VW e-brake handle and cables? -stick
Being as you already have just shy of 4 billion projects, are you going to put that on the roof, or at your mom's storage utopia? Is that for "the flea"? Always thinking on the cheap dude. I love it.
That hole wasn't part of the original "german enginering" of that car, some lazy ass cut that hole to repair a broken clutch tube and he did it wrong. Thats why it's like that. The way I do it you can't even tell it was ever cut and repaired. That's why there is an identical hole on the drivers side just behind the e-brake. Mike (I'm a classic VW mechanic... what ever pays the bills huh?)
Thats pretty dumb to go to all that work and expense (VW`s aren`t cheap anymore) when you could have just rolled some sheetmetal over a pipe and got the same thing.
um..... it was a pan out of a junk vw he got it for free... to me it's worth the cutting blades to use the tunnel
Hahahahah... yeah I know but this pan was FREE and pretty rotted out. It was going to the scrapper anyway. I recycled what I could and made use out of something that was basically trash. Plus, it wasn't that difficult. GO GREEN OF GO HOME!! -stick aka Cheap-E
with the price of metal today this is a great deal and a good way to make do with what you have. the front pan head will fix a bug project he has, the tunnel, well it will be used as a tunnel in another car. and the rear part of the pan will become a trike project. sounds like recycling at its best.
hey stick, you going to use the torsion housing? If not I'll give you a couple of bucks for it. I've got a couple of chrome e-brake handles and e-brake cables if your going to use the brake in your car.... Mike
Hey Stick, That's diabolical! If I remember correctly, those tunnels are ridged as hell. They would probably add much needed strength to a floor rebuild/modification. And......great to see that another piece of "Das Peoples Car" ain't goin' ta China as scrap! Swankey Devils C.C. Happy Xmas Happy Whatever
Around here that's usually about all that's left of the pans. For VWs "not being cheap anymore" I sure have a hell of a time getting rid of even decent pieces for them, unless I want to sell 'em for like a dollar each. Thus explaining why this rotty pan was free - In fact, VWs are the cars I have the loader guy mash out of the way to get to the American car I want behind it, in the junkyard. I'd make an exception for a split-window, or stop him long enough to saw the oval window out of one, but that's about it.
Good for you Eddie, a piece of new rolled sheet metal would have cost way more than free. I would have done the same thing.
The front seat floors look decent enough to use as a spare piece in some other rod with rotted floors. Someone cut giant holes in my wagons floor and did the El Cheezo job of welding it in with plain old sheet metal. The only problem with that is the sheet metal wasn't bead rolled- so it makes that annoying KA-Thunk nice when you sit your feet on it. I'm gonna have to look for a junk clunker vee dub now....Cheaper than trying to make or buy original floor pans.... Scott
