Does anyone make steel roof panel inserts for model a that are "ribbed" ? I have seen smooth steel ones but none that have the ribs or beads in them. Any leads? or am I gonna have to make my own?

any in particular? I was thinking a mini-van or something like that. I'd like to not have to do much reshaping if I can avoid it.

I've seen Vega wagon used. Nice short, narrow set of ribs.

I think ribbed roof panels look out of place on a hotrod, more of a street rod thing to me.

I'm not incapable of making my own, just looking to put in as little labor as possible. Yes I could make one from scratch and roll beads in it but why do that if some manufacturer already did the work for me. Also I am from NJ which limits the amount of bone yards that I can cruise around in and take measurements. Closest place around here that'll even let a guy go out in the yard is like 35 miles. And it's mostly late mode stuff. Thanks for the leads so far guys. It'll give me a something to look for. Thanks, Mike.

Question - I've heard newer cars (80's on up) have the thin hardened sheet metal that doesn't weld very good. Any of you experienced this?

I used a 72 Vega stationwagon roof. I had to do some reshaping on the sides as it had a slight roll to the sides and didn't quite match the contour of the Model A. I heard of using a Chrysler mini-van or a mid 80's Olds Cutlass wagon on a Model A Sedan, although I haven't seen this one.

Used an early 70's Ford wagon on a 31 sedan. Ribs were rounded - most of the vans I looked at the local U-pullit were squared ribs.

    i really like the ribs
just look at pics on the web of later model rides (auto trader etc...) just to get some ideas
almost any type of vehicle with a long roof has the ribs for support, wagons, vans, suvs, 4 door trucks
a newer ford f150 has some cool ribs about 2 inches wide, saw one laying around at the body shop that i work at but it had the sunroof hole

I used a smooth roof on my coupe. The donor was a 70 cougar (I think mustangs are the same) it fit nicely and the curve was dead on. I am going to use ribs on my Vicky.

Please help me understand this. What are the mian differences between a "street rod" and a "hot rod". The roof on my 31 olds is filled with a smooth roof. That is considered more hot rod than street rod? Can anyone please help me understand the differences so I don't look like an A- hole next time I post something on the HAMB.

I cut the roof out of a 75 Ford Econoline, before it went to the crusher. It was handy and free...
