No offense taken.. I gotta make this quick (cause I'm supposed to be working) but I love printed magazines waaayy more than online magazines, maybe I shouldnt be saying so because of our "online magazine" but we WANT to print. We didn't create Deadend to be online forever, but we also don't want to print if we gotta get a million ads...we want to be better than we are now online but don't want to change our format... (make sense)

so basically #1... and yeah my subscription to garage just ran out, I'll subscribe again Stoner (I just have lots of bills right now)

  5. #2. I used to subscribe to a dozen or more, now the ones that haven't lapsed barely get looked at. Firstly, I'm not much interested in anything but 20s and 30s cars, and 60s-70s style custom bikes, and street rods don't do it for me. Secondly, I can get more info,(and more detail) from the H.A.M.B. and J.J. with a search, P.M. or new thread than in years of short mag articles. I probably wouldn't have lost as much interest in later model cars if there was a board as good as the H.A.M.B. for that stuff.
I don't read on-line mags, and don't care about the "Lifestyle" Rock-a-Fonzie Kulture stuff.
I do still read a few home-machining mags, and am fairly active on a machinist board, but I'm not much for forums, either, other than H.A.M.B./Jockey Journal.

    1. I'll always buy printed magazines. I like their portability, collectibility and the whole experience of paging through them exactly how and when I want to.

    #1.

I've been buying car magazines for 56 years, have probably bought 4000 magazines in that time, and still have about half of them. I wouldn't know how to stop.

The overall picture has certainly changed, though. I may spend 8 hours a day here on the HAMB, and I subscribe to far fewer magazines than I used to. I wouldn't pay for multiple website memberships about cars, but I really do like the immediacy that this medium permits.

My guess is that those magazines that are high quality and cover timeless material (TRJ and Hop Up are the best examples for me) -- keepers -- will continue successfully, but the more traditional monthlies like R&C will have a tough time staying afloat.

#1. Magazines forever! I don't currently subscribe to ANY magazines, but I still love them. Once they are printed, they stay the same forever. The internet is swell and all, but it's just not ink on paper, is it?
I buy a couple magazines a year if something catches my eye or there's a car I love in it or a tech article I want to hang onto. I don't bother subscribing anymore because that only happens about once per year per title.

  12. it's 2 for me.. I don't like to spend money on something when I can find it for free.. especailly if it's $6-$15 and I won't get more than 30 minutes of enjoyment out of it. I have a very short attention span, so I don't read anything more than once.. and I hate clutter.

  13. :) That's a great site Denise. Thanks for that ;)

    Danny-Dan Dan,

I like a good magazine if it is well done and is on good paper and love jonesing for them to come in the mail!

BUT, I also like it when a print magazine has a companion website that can delve a bit deeper into features as well as having issues/stories archived and has an online store in which to buy softgoods, back issues etc.

have you seen Zinio? I know not too many people hopped on the bandwagon, but it could be a start for something cool...

  15. I would buy more magazines if they were better.

For the big name titles,I buy 10% of what I used to.
    Probably less.

    If the quality isn't there,why bother ?

I dont buy the amount of printed stuff I used too. That said... You still cant replace the emotion of "opening that latest issue" digitally.

They both have their place but I still prefer option #1.

  17. I am on the internet daily and like the instant availability of information, having said that there is something about a magazine that moves me in a more primal way. When you open the mailbox and see the glossy cover on that latest issue your anticipation goes up and yet you don't rip it open instantly. You save it for later when you can take time to really dig into the articles and examine every picture intently. Then there is the feel of the newsprint and the ink smell. Nope there isn't any way possible that the internet could replace a good car magazine. I think part of it is the tangibility of the printed medium. You have it from now until the time you decide to pass it on or recycle it. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" /><o:p></o:p>

It is like the difference in downloading an MP3 or finding that perfect old LP or single vinyl of your favorite artist. I have listened to perfectly clean mp3's of classic 50s music on an IPOD and still prefer the characteristic hiss of the needle while you wait for the first note of an old Patsy Cline song. Print will always be more real than electronic media to most people but the younger generation of today may live to see its demise. My 21 year old would rather pay to download music than to go buy the CD.<o:p></o:p>

The only thing I dislike about most publications in the last few years is that they have turned into &#8220;Ad Rags&#8221; with just a few pages of real content. Truckin&#8217; magazine comes to mind. I picked one up to look at while waiting for my turn in the barbers chair a while back and the first 30 pages were 20 plus inch wheels and bolt on crap to make it &#8220;your&#8221; individual truck. I put it back on the table and picked up the Readers Digest.<o:p></o:p>

    # 1 just pick up a copy of "Garage" yesderday.

  19. Good description of how I felt twenty + years ago every month when the new one came out. Used to go to the mailbox every day just in case one came early. Now I don't even look at every one that comes. I like red Camaros and small block Chevies, but how many different ways can you build either one?

#1 for sure. I drive my wife crazy with all the magazines that I buy. I used to subscribe, but I don't like every issue. I am selective and just don't buy for the sake of buying a specific title. Rodder's Journal and Garage are two of the standouts that I buy without even opening the cover. I think the reason I prefer mags over online stuff, is the stories and information that are included along with all the pics. They sort of play hand in hand, if the magazine doesn't provide enough info, I can usually find more online. In fact, I think that is how I found the HAMB.

    Number 1

I gotta be able to hold a mag in my hands. I can't hold a PC or a laptop in my hands. It's just not the same.

I just like the look and feel of the print media. I will be subscribing to them as long as I am still able to read.

  24. :) Pretty much how I feel.....(#1) Toe said it all for me....I would also like to add  CB Chief's comment as well....."last few years they have turned into "Ad Rags" with just a few pages of real content".

Sadly to be able to put out that quality paper, and the expenses that
keep racking up....they need advitisers to pay for the magazine and contents.
There still is no substitute for holding, carrying, savoring, and then devulging every picture, word, and yes the ads.:D

i have a laptop with wireless, still prefer print though. i like to throw the latest stuff in a satchel when i take trip. sometimes reading stuff on the net just sucks. plus trying to dig up that article from a year ago or so, you always run across something else that you have forgotten about. having the paper in hand also gives a tactlie feel you just do not get with a laptop.....

First of all, i'm a technology geek-- it's my career.

    That said, #1 ABSOLUTELY.

Digital and the web is amazing and great, but it just doesnt do it enough to replace a great magazine. I love good magazines, and have to admit that i get excited when the new Garage comes out.

roll up in your back pocket n carry around,
easy to "hide-n-read" inbetween stacks of paper (at work),
