Very quick......the sketch took about 20 minites and the B/w art (so Far was about 2-3 hours.

Yes...I use a dig. pen and a Wacom tablet.
A mouse has zero accuracy and I like the pens for pressure sensitivity.

Jeff!, thanks for this post. I've been diggin your work for years!. Being an "old guy" it just amazes me how you can do it on a computer, I can barely get this reply up. Guess I'm going to have to stick with the India ink and Speed ball pen. Cant wait for the color post. Jeff Norwell, you are the ART GOD!!!!

  8. I miss my Wacom tablet... Drawing with a small brick is limiting.

Pressure sensitivity? Knowing what I know about pentabs, touchscreens and how they operate I'm guessing the sensitivity is actually registered through the pen?

So, does the pen have a cable on it or is it wireless? Bluetooth?

What I lack in artistic ability (and MAN, do I ever lack) I try to make up for with techno-geek and amateur porn star moves.......

You're work is inspiring. Unfortunately, my experimenting with mind altering substances days have left my hands/nerves like they are being controlled by some mean little kid.......

Not being a Coral user, does it have a layer mask type function like photoshop to remove unwanted portions? Also, do your black lines all line up at the end of the day when things like the front tires are added, or do you use white to cover up the sections that don't match. I assume you can scale individual items as you go. Ie is bigger blower, smaller wheels etc.

Lastly, I love how you equated the computer as a tool. A common misconception is that they do the work for you. That a filter is equated to creativity (not so). Computers don't think or draw, there is always a madman behind the keyboard. Fantastic stuff. Mad skills.

Have you used the fely coverd nib on the wacom pens? Sooooooooo smooth compared to the standard hard plastic ones.

  13. Jeff, I've got a permanent folder "JeffNorwell" on my desktop where I'm stashing all the images you post. I'm studying your illustrations to try and learn from you; I guess you're already a teacher after all...

Thankx for providing some extra insight with this thread!

Great Tech Jeff! I've been playing with painter off and on for a bit, I love it.

    Question:
what is the trick to drawing ellipses (like wheels/tires) with the tablet and stylus? everytime I try to draw one freehand I feel like I'm drawing with my feet - the line is all over the place. Maybe it's just practice...

ok, im a real technology geek and a wanna be artist-- so this really interests me.

wow, how things have evolved-- i knew it would, but having someone as bad ass as Jeff post how he does his stuff just validates... build a technology that makes things easier, and you can corrupt anyone, lol :-D

back in the day a bit, around the time graphics were introduced to the internet by NCSA's Mosaic program (guy went on later to form Netscape,) i started to use similar tools & techniques (ala much more primitive) as Jeff describes-- building logos and websites. All the "real artists" i knew didnt touch any of this stuff.

Fast forward a number of years...... and even Norwell is up on all this stuff.

Sometimes i think technology is a little evil..... to a degree it lessons the importance of pencils and paint for artists..... and it corrupts all us dumb fucks to sit in front of a computer screen instead of being in the garage more... Satan and I are laughing to the bank :-D

  19. This is a post Ive been waiting for. Thanks so much for the step by step process. I purchased a Wacom tablet awhile back and just could not get used to it. I gave it to my oldest son. He loves it. Of course he is the artist of the family and Im the hack.

I cant wait for the color process. Thanks for taking the time to put this together for us "wanna be's"

Rashy- The pen is a wire-less tool...when you recieve a tablet, a pen comes with the unit. You can buy extra pens and customize them accordingly as you wish.
You can adjust pressure, role and spread in the preferences of the Wacoms folders.
I have ALWAYS been heavy handed. With traditional tools long before the idiot box...I was always snapping pencils, ripping thru canvas and such.I have to keep a constant thought of being "gentle".
Since my introduction to this type of tool.... I have literally broke about 3-4 pens a year....It is something I must keep myself fully aware of.
Same goes in the shop...I am constantly applying Magilla Gorilla strength on things that only need a slight of hand.Torches and welding equipment in my hands are a seroius detrement to those nearby.

I have several pens and yes I have 2 of the above ones you mentioned.

Meteor=It is practice... but in Painter you can use the selection adjuster/hold shiftand the apple key.... this will rotate/squeeze any elipse selection you make into the proper angle and perspective.
Sometimes I freehand .....sometimes I don't.....depends how many coffees I have had that day!
Scotty.....Back in 94 I heard this ungodly appparatus was coming.I firmly believed that the computer was the anti-christ.But....like Luke Skywakers Dad...I joined the dark side.
I felt that no computer or software could revelwhat a talented artist could do.
Well....its just another tool...... is all.
The unfortunate part is that we have lost about 3 generations of artistic skill...Look back at what the greats were doing in the 40's,50's and 60's.
    A complete lost art.

Thats why I post soo many old car art ads.....There are great secrets in those peices of art.

  22. i`ve only just got to grips with photoshop and now i`ve gotta try corel painter...buying a tablet has helped me greatly in using the computer for this sort of work...but boy have i got a long way to go

Thanks Jeff, you truly are a ruler!

Amazing tutorial...I would love to see a color tutorial from you as well, you really have a way of pushing its limits and creating very striking images!

Great thread, Jeff! I guess I was an "early adopter" with my Koala Pad back in 1982 or so, but haven't had a graphics tablet since. Guess it's time I took the dive.
