altenator on stock cad 390

    I want to upgrade my stock gen with a altenator. besides an altenator what other parts will i need? Has anyone done this before? Any tips?

  3. Done it on a '55 Chevy, just got to modify the mount, then wire it up right. The most common GM alternator used 3 wires, the large stud terminal gets connected to the battery with a nice big wire, the plug in terminal has 2 wires, you'll need to consult a schematic to determine which, but one is for the idiot light, if used, the other needs 12volts only when the ignition is on, this energizes the field, the problem with this is that it needs to disconnect from everthing else when you turn it off or the motor will keep running.

    yeah, i did this-- put a GM alternator on my 390 Caddy motor. it's easy. used the stock mount and modified the stock bracket. i'll snap some pics. if i forget, pm me...
