so i guess the 57 car rear end will definatly not hold up right

  2. My 55 Chevy I'm running a built 440 Mopar I'm using a 8 3/4 Mopar rear end with a spool and 4:11 gears ....The 57 Pontiac rear was my second choice they are 60'' wide and would fit right in, but cost was the factor.

I'm workin' on mine! I've got a target date of mid-May for my company's big show...two weeks later is Power Tour...a short time after that is the Hot Rod Reunion in Columbus...a short time after that is the York Reunion and drag race. And in August we've got a trip planned to B'ville...if the worlds align, I'll be at the HAMB drags...if not this year, then it's on my calendar for next year.

    Them's fightin' words!
When I planned the 8 3/4, I was planning a hot SBC. Then the 482-inch 409 came into the picture. I'll admit the rear may end up being the weak link, but with Moser axles, a spool with 4.30 gears, a back brace and Yukon Noduler iron center, it should live when I dump the clutch. I DO plan on racing my '57 wagon, a lot. I also plan on driving my 6th grade son to school in it. For the street, I've got a stock 489 case, Sure Grip and I'll put some street-friendly gears on it.

NOOOOOOO!!!!! The 57 9 inch has skinny tapered axles and will not take abuse of any kind if you are using slicks. I broke them regularly, as well as the war case, until I saved up enough $ for aftermarket stuff. Came home on a trailer or tow truck from the drags MANY times before learning this one.

This old rattle trap Rambler uses a '57 Olds rearend with Summers Brothers axles and a Moroso Brute Strength differential (as apposed to a spool). Back when this picture was taken (1971) it was powered by a SBC/4-speed combo and used a spool. One day a wet tire turned the car into the starter stand and starting line lights thus the swap to a slightly more forgiving limited slip set-up. The current engine/trans combo is a Ford 351W backed by a C6.....as soon as the restoration is done, of course.

The Ross Auto Willys that I crew on has a SBC 350 with a few mods, TH350, and '57 Chevy rear end. Of course, the axles and gears aren't stock.

Hey..if you show me yours, I'll show you mine..I'm restoring an old 51 Chevy hardtop gasser, it has a 57 Olds rearend and the motor mounts are BBChevrolet, the story goes it ran a 396, has a really sparse racecar interior with the original mint green bottom and darker green roof...I'm not gonna go back 396, too expensive to work on these days..454 will be just fine...

I'm building a '56 Chev gasser, it has a dana 60 in it, from it's race car days. They are heavy, but with a good set of axles unbreakable.

Low horsepower? I see cars running deep into the 9's with 8 3/4 rears with no problems.

GASSER52, A 57' Pont. rear for $100.00? If this is a complete assembly, 57' Pont. is THE only year that's a direct bolt in for 55-57 Chevrolets;the spring pads are already correctly spaced. BUY IT!!! The only drawback with 57' Pont/Olds is THAT is the only year for 29 spline axles;58-64 were 31 spine and the axles are 1" longer(they can be shortened easily). Finding a posi for a 29 spline will be virtually impossible and NO spools were ever made for them in 29 spline. But, all the 31 spline stuff swaps right in. Myself, I have a 57' Olds with a 3.42:1 open rear, all new; but, I have a pair of Strange 31 spline race axles(will need to shorten them 1 ") and 2 posi pumpkins; a 4.88:1 and a 5.37:1. Oh, I hope you're a big, tough guy cause' that's what it takes to handle these things, They're HEAVY.BUTCH.

Blown 302 Ford, 9" locker, 456 gears, 10" Hoosier QT Pros, ladder bars leaf springs with sliders. I figure the T-5 will break before anything else. 12.72 is the best 1/4 time us screwballs have been able to get out of her so far.

" well I heard...I knew a guy that heard..." blah blah blah!

8-3/4 rears are plenty strong, if you put good parts in 'em, like Brad is doing.

I've SEEN an 8-3/4 stand up to 700-800 hp in a digger for years, never broke nuthin'. I could TOUCH it tonight. I don't rely on hearing bs tales. Jeez.
