probably a stupid question, but does the salt at bonneville rust out the cars the like our road salt here in NY
no,the salt at B-ville is worst! on the cessna(airplane tires) they don't like them at B-ville,when i took my fiat out there with the airplane tires they put a speed limit of 200 mph on me. i ran 186 at 5000rpm,just loafing along. getting small speed rated tires is hard to do,the aluim is the way to go.
Thanks everyone. Glad you like the pics. I had a great time. This is the only other good picture I have of the Tow Truck.
thanks stomper. Did you get any shots of the 43 car, Stewart Family and Creel? I see they grabed a record too like Bobby Green did with a flathead banger. Bumped it from 109 to 150 and change in the BFL class!
Bonneville salt is worse than road salt.... in my opinion. I guess there is no "real" way to tell. Also consider that we often run through water sitting on top of the salt, it gets in every nook and cranny. Plus wet salt will cake up in places you have NO idea how it got there.
Flyin-t, I'll sift through my photos to see if I did or not. There was way too much to see. From where we parked near the inspection area to the end of the pits was just over a mile long. And yes that salt gets everywhere. I never went over 35 and I had salt everywhere under my truck. I spent a good 45 minutes laying under it with a hose in my swim trunks last night. Not a pretty picture.
very nice photos! one of my dreams is to be out there one day... rusting out my car.. but something tells me it is worth it!
Great shots! When I took my old A coupe out there in 98 the salt did get every where, I put a garden sprinkler under car for about 8 hours and a year later I was still finding salt and the rust that went with it, but YES it was worth it.
Damn it!! I gotta get out to that event.....see it with my own eyes...hear it with my own ears. Thanks for the pics.
I haven't had time to dump most of my pics but here is another one of the bagged tow truck (which is a fully functioning truck) the guy that built it camped right next to us and was a really nice guy... He is from a super small town in Idaho. Was eating elk steak and eggs for breakfast... and would be fun guy to get to know better.
Thanks for the great pictures of ALL the cars! I really appreciate it. I can see the cars so soon after or during the event on the HAMB. Thanks!

Being a life-long car guy who has made it out to the salt twice... If you don't go to the salt at least once... you are missing out on an experience of a lifetime. I was humbled my first trip out. It was amazing. What you see in the pictures is only part of it... You need the smells... the feel of the salt... the SOUNDS... Its a magical place
Good to see the flats again. Was out there in 2000. It's really stickin this year. The photos & the sound. Something to take home, something you never forget the Sound
It really is a magical place. It's a place where day and date is insignificant. It is all about the sounds, smells and sights of the cars. It is so laid back. Being right there at the start of the run and being able to just walk down between the cars as they are waiting for their runs. Being in the tech area with the streamliners with their skins off. This was my first time and I am making plans for next year. Like they say "Speed, no known cure".
I agree that you should attend at least once. You will never forget the crisp morning air with the ocean like salt smell in the air and then every once in a while as you walk the pits you will get a a very stong fuel smell. Ain't nothing like it.
I looked at the Beatty tank when it was at Ravon Street Rods in Billings. To call the frame and roll bar construction & welding crude would be a compliment of the highest order. The fact that someone had the stones to drive it as fast as they did in 55 is beyond belief. Must have had to haul his sack around with a wheel barrow, or just kids that didnt know better. A true classic
