54 ad GMC removing spring hangers

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by NONAME, Jul 14, 2007.

  1. 54 GMC, could be any car I guess. moving the spings from out side the frame. removing those large rivets doesn't appear easy or fun, couple that I can get to with a grinder and a punch seems straight up a few looks like the only way to remove them would be drilling.
    Any tips or sugestions?

    Here's how I did it:
Use your cut off wheel to slot the head of the rivet without hitting the frame (much).
It should now look like a slotted screw.
Buzz the head off with an air hammer chisel. POP, yer done!

    One down, 11 to go!:D

Make sure you wear safety glasses!

great idea. or drill a hole in it and use the air chisel. or use the torch (carefully).

taking out rivets on them old frames is fun work, if you like swearing.

i grind the head off and either drill a hole throigh it or blow a hole in the center of it with a touch.
rots of luck either way they are a total pain in the ass.

i center punched and drilled the rivet heads in several steps till the rivet head fell off then drove the rivets out with a drift punch

  6. got to think if you grind off one side and hit it with a punch, goodbye, just pick the easiest side to get to. Or put a late model rear in on the stock perches with some lowering blocks and live with it.

  7. thanks after reading these answers I going to try one of my Step drills. I don't know why I didn't think of that. thanks
    rusty nyer,
I can't use the stock hangers with a 10 narrowed rear end
