Ok this is the ending of the build up for this roadster. I'll use this one and post all the progress shots from the past 4 months. However this is like the preview. Can't see em', cause I'm at work, but man! Travis you're a Mad man! Great job! on the roadster! You going to the LA Roadster show? What's next? Also, I noticed the rear license plate treatment on the 40', NICE! Ken
WOW...nice!!!!! Pretty hard to beat a '28/9 roadster with a Duvall style WS and a flatty...... Roadster looks to have some nice 'company' too.......
Thats a cool little Roadster and I love the Coupe in the background............I must have stopped to look at them 3 or 4 times Saturday.
Ain't nothing like the sound of a V8 Flathead! Were my eyes deceiving me or were you driving it without headlights? If so no wonder the cops were hanging around your car. Neat car anyway.
I have been kinda sick of Model A's latley but i really like this one. do you have any pictures of it finnished. I dig the wide fives in the video. A lot.
i like the angle iron x-member... sturdy and homemade without looking like a jungle gym of box tubing
this is the motormount. it was a lot of work. Didn't want the typical huge mount on top of the frame look, now it looks like the engine is floating. burger I love the rightanglechannel fab. It looks close enough to stock but not a tube. the easiest way to figure the body was to make alot of measurements, than cut it in half. This was around 23jan07 so this was the mockup stage, everything but the front end was on stands. TP
this is the backside of the engine mount. It's pretty strong, enough for a 21 stud flatty. Although the roadster is super tall, suspension-wise, I still wanted to channel it, actually cheater channel it. (about half-way) It was so nice to cut out the nasty original floor. I was hesitant at first but as the saying goes... This was around 01feb07 After alot of jackstand adjustments, the body was put back together. I thought I had taken a better picture, but I cut some square tubing lengthwise to make round-cornered angle iron, than conformed the pieces to fit on top the A frame. Then the body was welded to the new body mount. I'll take a shot tomorrow, it really is easy, time consuming but easy. This was around 14feb07 With the body mounted and square, figured a track-style paint job was in order. Between these 2 shots, the grille shell was lengthened, the headlight bars were made/lengthened, the windshield was templated, and the brackets for the radiator ('37 v8-60) were made up. I'll show pics next time. Also of the 40 dash sectioning, lots of work. Also see the '36 radius rod ends holding the rear corners. This was an old race car so the wheelwells and rear floor were torched out for a heavy Z. My kinda car. TP
Very hip build, nice construction pix , very nice fab work. Love seeing the Japanese art on the machine, obvious pal helping in the scene, I love the Japanese people, I have dealt with them in the vintage clothing business for the last 15 years and they are so honorable and cool folks. Car sounds killer as well as lookin pure bad ass!!-Sololobo
last year I needed money and had a roach 30 roadster body, I did a mock-up and painted it with the red-dot configuration. It looked better than I thought, and planned the 29 to be RED DOT II. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ since this roadster was to have the HALLOCK style windshield, the dashrail was not going to be used. Mating the 40 DASH is more difficult without this piece, as instead of a simple square attachment, it is round like the cowl. obviously first it must be sectioned in the center. This is the tricky part. it took one night to do the sectioning and start on the corners. by the next night it was pretty much finished other than the trim piece. this is a more recent shot after some rubbed out rattlecan... TP
the japanese writing was done by the world famous best ever brand new pinstriper..."the emperor von baron Zap" aka zap teshima a damn good photographer and nice guy straight from the "red Neck" part of japan as he called it. the writing on the door says Perich Brothers and the writing on in the white says red dot two....i hope. here he is in action... and we couldn't let the favor go un rewarded....travis showed zap how to tig and mig...and i showed him how not too...word is he signed up for some welding classes by his house and hasnt talked to his family since... he just mumbles and grunts somthing about playing with electric fire.
some pics i took while we were double checking everything after the first drive sunday evening in paso.
i was thinking to make a new thread, but since this event kinda revolved for me around this car, figured to tell what fun can be had with a couple of beaters... First off I have to admit to pulling the RED DOT to the show. By thursday it was obvious that it was not going to be a freeway driver, the front tires look like El Mirage, and there are still no rear brakes, for starters. In retrospect, I coulda swapped the front hubs on the 40 and used its front wheels, but since PATLASH brought his SILVER BULLET from San Jose figured we'd have a trailer race, Ford VS Chevy, 5.0+AOD vs 454+t400. We had a fun night tuning the rpu(chief) and reddot, finishing around 1AM. Along with Luke & Sloppy(sophorn sin), PAT can vouch for us working outside with 2 60w lightbulbs!! Also think they have a new appreciation for warm Natural Light Beer! At 6:05, while in bed, I was seriously contemplating just driving chief. Killing the Van going up the 14 pulling a trailer isn't really affordable right now. By 6:50 the trailer was hooked up. (this was a pile of parts on 04jan07!!) this is white nuckle, sent the kamikaze pilot LUKE out, first time ever on dragstrip. The first run, car stalled, had to get out and start (on solenoid) got a 41second pass... his reaction time decreased from .947, .650, .487 to .242 final run. The Last Pass he took the RED DOT To 18.6+s at 71+ mph, breaking out at #3!! The orange shoebox had his times within 0.1 so it woulda been a tough win. It was good to see the performance, and also to get another 21 year old addicted... to a car with a 1937 engine! this is 100 octane special. This thing hauls ass for a 6 gettin into the 16's. Pat's a lowkey guy, but not on the race track - watchout! this is race ready with 6.00LT rear tires and custom aluminum can carb SLOPPY SCOOPS. the engine was swapped in september (primernats thread) but just tight stock. More of a freeway car, the best time last year was 19.7 (cough) with the heavy 7.50LT's/3.78's. -the first run was terrible, the car was detonating all over and barely moving, 25s pass. Figuring something broke in the heat, found out the choke was on! doohh. -Second pass matched the 19.7 mark, but had taken off the aircleaners so the fuel was sucked out the carbs. -Third pass made the Sloppy Scoops and got into the 70mph club at 18.8+s. shoulda cleaned the plugs but it was fun. broke out .8 under! The best part was my reaction times lowered from .180, .140 to .090 which was cool. this was our flathead nemesis. Decent flathead with an A Halibrand quickchange. The races with this car were the greatest. In a stockish flathead, you can read the paper while goin down the track. With these flathead cars all the races were super close, tons of fun. TP
70 mile an hour club...ha i think some of those wizzers got into that elite club as well.-lusious ledfoot
