Well I love the power of the internet. It appears it is 392. Is this correct? If so how can I tell if its a 325hp motor or a 375hp (from a letter car???) Do those 9's and 6's look right????
Theres plenty of threads that tell ya how to ID a Hemi... SEARCH! (I dont mean that in a asshole way either =)
I believe the NE57 means it's from a '57, which in itself would make it a 392, but you can also tell because it's got that seperate water crossover manifold. All hemis from 300's had dual quads so it's "just" a regular one.
The humps cast into the end of the heads look like it's a 392. High HP letter cars have dual quads and adjustable rockers.
Thanks guys, going on the number and water cross over it is a 392 but does that serial number look suss? Those 6's and 9's seem a different style to the other numbers?
NE57 - 1001 1957 New Yorker 392 4 325 NE57 - 1001 1957 New Yorker 392 2-4 375*** http://www.hothemiheads.com/hemi_info/hemi_engine_id.html
Pete.....those last numbers on the block do not look like a factory stamp.... make sure and be careful...6K is spendy. Just my take is all.
Thanks - yeah Im nervous about that too. Anyone else have a view on it or preferably a picture of a factory 9 and 6. Thanks.
RELAX..... THE NUMBERS ON THERE ARE FINE !!! THOSE ARE FACTORY MoPar STAMPED #s, IF NOT, THEN I GUESS I SHOULD FIND OUT WHO STAMPED ALL 3 OF MY DeSoto's AND BOTH MY 331 CHRYSLERS !!! CHRYSLER DID THAT SO THEY ONLY HAD 1 STAMP FOR THE 6 & 9, AND ITS DISTINCTIVE OF MoPar....... KINDA LIKE HARLEY DAVIDSON DID THE SAME THING, SO YOUR AVERAGE JOE DIDNT GO STAMPING #s IN STOLEN ENGINES. SMALL BLOCK CHEVY GUYS SHOULDNT COMMENT ON A HEMI QUESTION ....... THEY JUST DISTURBE THE PEACE !!
Really?.well I will go out to the shop today and check my hemis for there numbers....I will take pics and upload them later today.
not to rob this thread but, wheres those numbers at in the pic????i have a 392 sittin in my yard an would like to figure out just what it is! again, sorry to rob your thread pete!
Some of us chevy folks know that mopar numbers look really funky like some guy stamped them at home with a cold chisel, and that the ones shown in the pic are legit.....
According to my hemi book it's a 1957 Chrysler FirePower Hemi, 392, 4 inch bore x 3.906 stroke, 325HP @ 4600RPM, 430 foot pounds of torque@2800 rpm, 9.25 compression ratio, 4 BBL carb, 6.95 rod length, 2 Inch intake exhaust valves, 1.75 dia exhaust valves, came out of a Chrysler new Yorker.
actually I'm a big block chevy guy, I got over the small block stuff a while ago. And I do have some hemi stuff laying around, a few 331 bits and a pile of rust desoto
numbers look right and the 392 has a 1/4 taller deck height, the heads were cast with the 1/4 risers to compensate and allow the manifolds to interchange with earlier models. The 354's had the same cross over. so that's not a sole factor for ID
The deck on the 392 is 1/2 inch taller than that of the 331 and 354. thats why the are called a tall deck. the heads are the same in physicle size and have the intake runners lower on the head (closer to the block) so the manifold sets lower to keep the carbs low and to keep the same plane as the 354 and the 331 engines. 392 heads are 392 heads only. the smaller ones will work with 1/4 spacers to make up for the increased deck height.
To add to what Hot Rod Packard said....The water outlets are also lower. On 392 heads you can put your thumb on top of the water outlet and not touch or cover the valve cover gasket. You can not do this on 354 or 331 (with a water cross over). From the pics, you can easily do this, so these are 392 heads. The 392 blocks do have a deck height of 1/2 taller (not 1/4). I can not tell from your pics if this one is or not.
